A persistent infection by a baculovirus-like particle was found in the established lepidopteran (Heliothis zea) cell line, IMC-HZ-1. The virus caused CPE in less than 1% of the IMC-HZ-1 cells, as measured by phase-contrast and electron microscopy. Transmission tests showed that four lepidopteran cell lines were susceptible to the persistent virus (designated as IMC-HZ-1-NOV). In inoculated TN-368 cell cultures, 90–100% infection was achieved. The ultrastructure and development of IMC-HZ-1-NOV in cell cultures were similar to known baculoviruses, and it is probable that this persistent virus is a member of the family Baculoviridae. Two lepidopterous species (Estigmene acrea and H. zea) inoculated with IMC-HZ-1-NOV by intrahemocoelic injection and/’orper os feeding of larvae were not susceptible.

The effect of an artificial diet on developmental rate, a life history parameter, was examined for the swallowtail butterfly Papilio xuthus. Artificial insect diets are an essential component of many insect rearing systems that produce insects for research purposes. Complex agargelled diets are generally prepared in large batches and used shortly after preparation because the degradation of perishable diet ingredients, such as vitamins and fatty acids, can adversely affect insect quality (Brewer 1984). However, the timing of diet preparation may be inconvenient, and large batches wasteful, if the unused excess is discarded. The percentage of pupation varied considerably, with no significant differences among diets, on which a maximum pupation percentage of 83% was observed. Pellet-type diets were investigated with the aim of developing a more easily prepared diet. The extrusion of the artificial diet under high temperature and pressure may induce desirable chemical and physical changes in the extruded product. The purpose of the present study was to develop an artificial diet for rearing P. xuthus.

Individually reared larvae were fed one of six artificial diets and fresh plantain at 26 "C, lightldark (h) 1519. The times of moulting, larval and pupal weights, and adult characteristics (fertility, sex) were recorded.Larvae were easily reared on bean, wheat germ, caseinwheat germ and fresh plantain, while casein, alfalfa, and plantain diets proved unsatisfactory.
