One of the most studied variables in virtual online education is engagement because it contributes to retention and academic performance. Several studies show that the didactic design of the virtual course, the role of the teacher, interactivity, interaction, time spent in the virtual environment, and the use of digital social networks increase engagement. However, there is a lack of research that compares which of the two digital social networks, WhatsApp or Telegram, promotes higher levels of engagement. This study’s objective is to analyze the effect of the educational use of Telegram on student engagement. An experiment (pretest and posttest with a control group) is designed using a mixed-methods approach based on a convergent or concurrent triangulation design. The study populations (coincides with the sample) are those enrolled (n = 229) in the six editions of a virtual postgraduate course. The techniques used for data analysis were scatter plots, content analysis of teachers’ narratives, and statistical methods. The triangulation of the quantitative and qualitative results confirms that the educational use of digital social networks promotes engagement in all experimental groups (use of the virtual learning environment and Telegram) obtaining greater significant differences than in the control groups. It is concluded that the use of the following Telegram functionalities, chat groups, peer assessments, support for various types of online interaction, the exchange of digital media, and the design of surveys contributed, under the guidance of teachers, is to increase the student’s engagement.

An increase in Instant Messenger (IM) application users makes it easier for people to get connected through social media. Application developers regularly offer updates. However, those updates donâ€™t always satisfy users expectations, instead confuse them. Even users are sometimes hesitant to update the app thus they switch to another messaging platform. This research discusses the analysis and comparison of two IM applications that reached 100 million downloads on Play Store; Whatsapp and Telegram. The analysis process is carried out from the features use in the Instant Messenger application. The data collection procedure are conducted by viewing the traffic. The data acquisition technique is done by using literacy and observation study methods to get full access to smartphones. The results of the analysis are in the form of a comparing table between both IM applications and expected to be future reference for further reseach.Peningkatan pengguna aplikasi Instant Messenger (IM) memudahkan masyarakat untuk terhubung melalui media sosial. Pengembang aplikasi secara teratur menawarkan pembaruan. Namun, pembaruan tersebut tidak selalu memenuhi harapan pengguna, malah membingungkan mereka. Bahkan pengguna terkadang ragu untuk memperbarui aplikasi sehingga mereka beralih ke platform perpesanan lain. Penelitian ini membahas tentang analisis dan perbandingan dua aplikasi IM yang mencapai 100 juta unduhan di Play Store; Whatsapp dan Telegram. Proses analisis dilakukan dari fitur-fitur yang digunakan pada aplikasi Instant Messenger. Prosedur pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan melihat lalu lintas. Teknik akuisisi data dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode studi literasi dan observasi untuk mendapatkan akses penuh ke smartphone. Hasil analisis berupa tabel perbandingan antara kedua aplikasi IM dan diharapkan dapat menjadi acuan untuk penelitian selanjutnya.

The aim of the study is to determine the preference rankings higher education students’ social media platform preferences for educational purposes. The most used social media platforms in which people spend their time are respectively Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, WhatsApp, and Facebook in Turkey. These nine social media platforms were scaled using the method of pair-wise comparison. Participants of the study were 492 higher education students in Turkey. Data analysis was done using the Thurstone V. equation of state equation. In this research, social media tools preferred by higher education students for educational purposes are listed respectively as Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Twitter, Snapchat, Telegram, Pinterest, Facebook/FB Messenger and TikTok. Also, the preferences of female and male higher education students upon social media tools for educational purposes are examined. According to this for female students it is listed respectively as WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, Telegram, TikTok and Facebook/FB Messenger; and for male students, it is listed respectively as Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Twitter, Telegram, Facebook/FB Messenger, Snapchat, and Pinterest. El objetivo del estudio es determinar las clasificaciones de preferencia de las preferencias de la plataforma de redes sociales de los estudiantes de educación superior con fines educativos. La plataforma de redes sociales más utilizada en la que las personas pasan más tiempo son Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, WhatsApp y Facebook en Turquía. Estas nueve plataformas de redes sociales se escalaron utilizando el método de comparación por pares. Los participantes del estudio fueron 492 estudiantes de educación superior en Turquía. El análisis de los datos se realizó utilizando la ecuación de estado de Thurstone V. En esta investigación, las herramientas de redes sociales preferidas por los estudiantes de educación superior con fines educativos se enumeran respectivamente como Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Twitter, Snapchat, Telegram, Pinterest, Facebook / FB Messenger y TikTok. Además, se examinan las preferencias de los estudiantes de educación superior de ambos sexos sobre las herramientas de medios sociales con fines educativos. De acuerdo con esto, para las estudiantes femeninas, se enumera respectivamente como WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, Telegram, TikTok y Facebook / FB Messenger; y para los estudiantes masculinos, se enumera respectivamente como Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Twitter, Telegram, Facebook / FB Messenger, Snapchat y Pinterest.
