What we talk about when we talk about space and narrative (and why we’re not done talking about it)

Abstract: Narrative has often been considered “an art of time.” This essay traces some of the historical reasons for this state of the field, or fields, of narratology, pinpointing spots in classical, postclassical and contemporary narrative theory where compensation was attempted or is being made through a focus on space instead of time. It suggests that as geography and geographers have become increasingly interested in narrative approaches in dealing with concepts, visualization, and digitalization, it is perhaps (on… Show more

“…It has become clear that geographical locations and space play a crucial role in stories, for example, creating social and cultural expectations, contributing to emotional identification with the characters, or enabling the contextualisation of the story (Hyvärinen, 2018 ). In addition, the narrative form of stories enables readers to experience space and place emotionally and see spaces from other perspectives (Parker, 2018 ). This is justified, for example, by “links between plot progression and movement across spaces” (Prince, 2018 , p. 175).…”

A set can be scenery against which characters exist and move, or represent a symbolic force acting upon the feelings and reinforcing narrative elements (Joshua, 2018). Besides that, different aspects of spatial features contain parts of physical and cultural interactions, namely, contextual factors of social change; cultural aspects of settlement; the conceptualization of cultural landscape, and the taxonomy of cultural landscape from the perceptual theory (Shen & Chou, 2021;Pajouh et al, 2013).…”
