The interest of practitioners and academics in channel relationship management has shifted from corporate channel structures and relationships in conventional channels governed by use of power to relationships between independent firms involving contractual and normative control mechanisms. In this article, we identify several factors leading to this change of interest, propose a scheme for classifying channel relationship research based on control mechanisms, and suggest areas for future research involving the use of contractual and normative control mechanisms in conventional channel relationships.Channel management research and practice has long recognized the importance of managing relationships between the people and firms performing distribution functions-functions that create value by making products and services available to customers in an appropriate form at the right place and time. However, the growing interest in relationship marketing suggests a shift in the nature of general marketplace transactions from discrete to relational exchanges----~om exchanges between parties with no past history and no future to exchanges between parties who have an exchange history and plans for future interactions.As Macneil (1980, p. 60) indicates, pure discrete transactions are rare in business exchanges. Almost all channel transactions have some relational elements that can be used to coordinate channel activities and manage relationships between channel members (see Reve and Stern 1979; Hunt, Ray, and Wood 1985 for reviews). 1 Thus relationship marketing is not a new concept in the practice and study of channel management. However, the interests of both practitioners and academics have shifted from approaches used by one firm, typically the manufacturer, to coordinate channel activities to approaches for stimulating cooperative efforts between independent channel members.The objective of this article is to outline the nature of the shift in channel research attention and review some of the key issues related to this new direction. This article focuses on research associated with relationships between suppliers and intermediaries such as wholesalers and retailers. Direct relationships between suppliers and end users, either consumers or business firms, are discussed in other articles in this issue.In the next section, a framework for categorizing relationship-oriented channel management research is presented and used to highlight the shift in focus that has occurred. After offering some thoughts on why this shift has occurred, directions for future research in channel relationships are reviewed. The purpose of this article is to identify key unresolved issues in channel relationship management, not to provide a detailed literature review or a comprehensive theory on the development and maintenance of channel relationships. Résumé :Cet essai pose la théorie de la communication en tant que champ dialogique -dialectique en s'appuyant sur deux principes : le modèle constitutif de la communication en tant que métamodèle et la théorie en tant que pratique métadiscursive. L'argument au coeur de l'essai est que toutes les théories de la communication sont pertinentes au regard d'un monde vivant concret dans lequel « communication » est un mot riche de sens. Chaque tradition de la théorie de la communication fait rhétoriquement appel à certaines croyances courantes sur la communication et découle de ces croyances ; en même temps, chaque tradition remet en question d'autres croyances. Les complémentarités et les tensions entre les traditions génèrent un métadiscours théorique qui croise et, en fin de compte, nourrit le métadiscours pratique de la vie quotidienne ayant cours dans la société. Dans cet essai, les traditions de théorie de la communication rhétorique, sémiotique, phénoménologique, cybernétique, psychosociologique, socioculturelle et critique sont organisées en un schéma provisoire du champ. Ces traditions sont caractérisées par leur manière particulière de définir la communication et les problèmes de communication, leur lexique métadiscursif et les lieux communs métadiscursifs auxquels elles font appel ou qu'elles remettent en question. Des topois pour l'argumentation à travers les traditions sont proposés et des conséquences pour le travail théorique de même que pour les pratiques disciplinaires dans le champ de la communication sont discutées. Mots-clés : Théorie de la communication ; Tradition ; Épistémologie ; Cybernétique ; Phénoménologie ; Psychosociologie ; Rhétorique ; Sémiotique ; Théorie critique ; Théorie socioculturelle . Plutôt que d'être concernés par un champ théorique, il apparaît que nous opérions principalement en des domaines séparés. Les livres et les articles sur la communication mentionnent rarement d'autres travaux sur la théorie de la communication que ceux relevant d'écoles de pensée ou de spécialités (inter)disciplinaires étroites 4 . Sauf au sein de ces petits groupes, les théoriciens et théoriciennes de la communication ne semblent être ni en accord ni en désaccord à propos de fort peu de choses. Il n'existe pas de canons d'une théorie générale auxquels ils se réfèrent. Il n'est pas de buts communs qui les unissent, pas de querelles théoriques qui les divisent. Pour l'essentiel, ils et elles s'ignorent 5 . This essay reconstructs communication theory as a dialogical-dialectical field according to two principles: the constitutive model of communication as a metamodel and theory as metadiscursive practice. The essay argues that all communication theories are mutually relevant when addressed to a practical lifeworld in which "communication" is already a richly meaningful term.
