What was Learned from the New VFE-2 Experiments?

Abstract: In the present paper the main results of the new experiments from VFE-2 are summarized. These include some force and moment results, surface and off-body measurements, as well as steady and fluctuating quantities. Some critical remarks are added, and an outlook for future investigations is given.

“…At certain conditions, on a delta wing with a symmetrically rounded leading edge a second primary vortex is found inboard of the primary vortex. 13 The size and strength of the primary vortex tends to reduce with increasing leading-edge radius r le . Associated with this is a reduction of the induced surface-pressure suction peak.…”

“…[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] The studies show that the edge shape affects the origin and location of the primary-separation line, the size and position of the primary vortex and through mutual interaction with the wing boundary layer the generation of a secondary vortex and possibly a tertiary vortex. At certain conditions, on a delta wing with a symmetrically rounded leading edge a second primary vortex is found inboard of the primary vortex.…”

“…For the investigation, a generic half delta wing model following the geometry of the Vortex Flow Experiment 2 configuration (VFE-2) is used. Within the VFE-2 project, an extensive numerical and experimental database on the flow around this wing configuration was gained [21,22]. The delta wing model has a wing sweep of ϕ = 65…”

“…A detailed research on pressure distribution measurement especially in the region of the onset of flow separation for configurations with rounded leading edge was also studied. The models tested in the NASA transonic wind tunnels [7] were reused again as a generic model for further investigation using modern measurements techniques such as particle image velocimetry (PIV), pressure sensitive paint, hot wire, and steady balance within the VFE-2 team in wind tunnels across Europe Research Institutions [8][9][10][11][12][13]. The profile of the model [7] is shown in Figure 1(a) and its installation in the wind tunnel is shown in Figure 1(b).…”
