Several communities have adopted the transit-oriented development (TOD) model to improve the urban form of the city. Through the TOD model, citizens are enabled and encouraged to travel by public transit and live near it, resulting in a compact, walkable city. By emphasizing these principles, cities are able to create a sustainable urban environment that is beneficial to everyone. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between transit-oriented development (TOD) and traditional city models and to promote the TOD model among Middle Eastern planners. Although Peter Calthorpe developed the TOD model in the early 1990s, the elements of TOD have existed in traditional cities for a long time. Literature has not explored the relationship between these two models; therefore, traditional cities and their development have been studied, such as Marrakech and Fes in Morocco. Marrakech and Fes are both examples of traditional cities in Morocco. The two cities have different features, such as Marrakech’s riads, the old city walls, and the souks while Fes is known for its medina, the University of Al-Qarawiyyin, and its tanneries. This research, therefore, aimed to understand the correlation between traditional city models and TOD models by investigating: (a) the concept and diverse types of TOD models; (b) the relationship between TOD and traditional city models, and (c) the presence of TOD elements in traditional cities. This research provided insights into the opportunities and challenges of combining TOD models with traditional city models, in order to achieve more sustainable urban development.

The goal of this study was to find out how suitable the existing design of urban forms is for adopting transit-oriented development (TOD) basic ideas. Within a major metropolis and a medium-sized city, three varieties of Iranian urban fabric (historic, transitional, and modern) around transit stations were selected using the case study research technique. Then, for two sizes of station areas (macro) and street scales (micro), several TOD design dimensions were evaluated. The results of the comparative research indicated that Iranian cities offer greater chances for TOD design in inner urban areas (including historical and transitional urban forms), whereas microscale characteristics are less reliant on the kind of urban form.

Recently, there has been a growing global interest in typology as an effective mechanism for streamlining contextual complexities and facilitating the implementation of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), particularly in the vicinity of rail transportation systems. However, despite the precedence set by early adopters in the field of TOD, countries in the Middle East as newcomers lack comprehensive typological studies. Addressing this research gap, this paper endeavors to devise a TOD typology tailored to the geographical area encompassing a 400-meter radius around 33 active metro stations in Mashhad, Iran. Employing a systematic approach, the study constructs a spatial model integrating the 6D model (encompassing destination, distance, density, diversity, design, and demand management) alongside the k-means cluster analysis technique, thus contributing methodologically to the advancement of TOD typological methodologies. The findings delineate five discernible TOD archetypes, namely “urban neighborhoods,” “city commercial centers,” “specialized healthcare activity centers,” “recreational-educational activity centers,” and “transit centers.” Notably, the station areas categorized as “city commercial centers” exhibit the highest prevalence rate (78.78%). Nonetheless, the identification of the remaining four types bears significance, with the study notably introducing two novel typologies to the extant literature, namely the “specialized healthcare activity center” and the “recreational-educational activity center”, which hold applicability beyond the Iranian context. This research underscores the relevance of TOD typologies in informing urban development strategies and offers insights pertinent to transit-oriented planning endeavors.
