What the Eczema Area and Severity Index score tells us about the severity of atopic dermatitis: an interpretability study

Abstract: Our study provides the first guide for interpreting the EASI score. It enables translation of the EASI numerical output into an AD global severity state that should be more meaningful to providers and patients. Along with a short administration time, the EASI demonstrates adequate feasibility, further supporting its use in clinical trials.

“…Post hoc subgroup analysis for primary outcome according to baseline eczema severity Eczema Area and Severity Index scores according to group and baseline eczema severity (almost clear or mild EASI scores and moderate or severe EASI scores) 44 are shown in Table 16. There was no evidence that the clothing was more or less effective depending on the severity of eczema at baseline.…”

“…Our findings reflect the higher prevalence of ACD in this selected difficult‐to‐treat AD patient group as compared to patients with AD patch tested due to clinical suspicion during routine outpatient care or to screen for contact allergies. The mean EASI of 25 shows that this is indeed a group of severe AD patients,35 which makes it a different subgroup compared to mild AD patients, with therefore different rates of contact sensitization.…”

“…The molecular basis of APOE single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is cysteine-arginine interchanges. 3 APOE SNPs are the main genetic determinant of Alzheimer disease (AD) risk: individuals carrying the e4 allele are at increased risk of AD compared with those carrying the more common e3 allele, whereas the e2 allele decreases the risk. 3 Conversely, in patients with leprosy without dementia, the frequency of the e4 allele was significantly higher, suggesting that this allele is not a risk factor for dementia in elderly patients with leprosy.…”

“…Or should one focus on how much they bother a patient? 3,4 The authors chose to use one broad anchor question for all mentioned instruments: 'Would you describe your atopic dermatitis or eczema as mild, moderate, or severe?' In their validation paper of this single question, the authors conclude that it might be an important PRO for assessing the overall burden of disease that accounts for severity, extent, symptom burden and quality of life impact.…”
