What Speleothems Tell Us about Long-Term Rainfall Oscillation throughout the Holocene on a Planetary Scale

Abstract: Within the context of anthropogenic warming, rainfall oscillations may induce especially important societal impacts worldwide. In this article, we propose to study potential underlying mechanisms related to precipitation changes on a planetary scale by taking advantage of the recent theory of Rossby waves of long periods winding around subtropical gyres, the Gyral Rossby Waves (GRWs). The stable oxygen isotopic compositions of speleothems are used to regionalize and reconstruct the evolution of long-term rainf… Show more

“…However, for the change in rainfall in the middle latitudes of NH, the reasons may be much more complex. In addition to the global insolation change, the consequent changes in ocean activities at the suborbital scale are also crucial, such as changes in the north AMOC [108,109]. Events on smaller time scales, such as the NAO, the PDO, and changes in ENSO and ITCZ [109][110][111], all directly or indirectly affect the rainfall oscillation of the middle latitudes of NH, including the Alashan Plateau in central Asia.…”

“…On the interannual and interdecadal scales, nearly periodic changes in precipitation have been observed around the world [109]. There are two main reasons for the periodic changes in this rainfall oscillation, namely, the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly of subtropical gyres [120].…”

“…By breaking down speleothems used as archives of past climate into subharmonic modes, the following were shown: (1) how the weakening of ENSO activity occurred in the mid-Holocene and (2) the quasi-resonance of the equatorward migration of the summer Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) during the Holocene as a result of the progressive decrease in the thermal gradient between the low and high latitudes of the gyres [30].…”
