Abstract-In this paper, we present a wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) car-to-car (C2C) channel model based on a geometrical semicircular tunnel (SCT) scattering model. From the geometrical SCT scattering model, a reference channel model is derived under the assumption of single-bounce scattering in line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) propagation environments. In the proposed reference channel model, it is assumed that an infinite number of scatterers are randomly distributed on the tunnel wall. Starting from the geometrical scattering model, the time-variant transfer function (TVTF) is derived and its correlation properties in time, frequency, and space are studied. Expressions are presented for the spacetime-frequency cross-correlation function (STF-CCF), the twodimensional (2D) space CCF, the 2D time-frequency CCF (TF-CCF), the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF), and the frequency correlation function (FCF). Owing to the semicircular geometry, we reduced the originally threefold integrals to double integrals in the computations of the correlation functions, which simplifies the numerical analysis considerably. From the TVTF characterizing the reference model, an efficient sum-of-cisoids (SOC) channel simulator is derived. Numerical results show that both the temporal ACF and the FCF of the SOC channel simulator match very well with those of the reference model. A validation of the proposed model has been done by fitting the delay spread of the reference model to that of the measured channel, which demonstrates an excellent agreement. The proposed channel simulator allows us to evaluate the performance of C2C communication systems in tunnel environments.

Empirical studies show that cruising for car parking accounts for a non-negligible amount of the daily traffic, especially in central areas of large cities. Therefore, mechanisms for minimizing traffic from cruising directly affect the dynamics of traffic congestions. One way to minimizing cruising traffic is efficient car-parking-slot assignment. Usually, the related design problems are combinatorial and the worst-case complexity of optimal methods grows exponentially with the problem sizes. As a result, almost all existing methods for parking slot assignment are simple and greedy approaches, where each car or the user is assigned a free parking slot, which is closer to its destination. Moreover, no emphasis is placed to optimize any form of fairness among the users as the a social benefit. In this paper, the fairness as a metric for modeling the aggregate social benefit of the users is considered. An algorithm based on Lagrange duality is developed for car-parking-slot assignment. Numerical results illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm compared to the optimal assignment and a greedy method.

Transportation engineering focuses on the interaction between people, vehicles, and infrastructures to improve efficiency, safety, and environmental friendliness. Technologies associated with the cooperative vehicle infrastructure system (CVIS), are based on intelligent vehicles, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. This will eventually transform the transportation system configuration from human-vehicle-road coordination to vehicle-infrastructure cooperation, thereby significantly improving traffic efficiency and safety. In the CVIS environment, conventional human factors have a minimal impact and the intersection of people, vehicles, and roads is enhanced. Traffic systems can be controlled and evaluated effectively, and randomness can be reduced to a large extent. Perception, decision-making, and control are managed by robots instead of people, which could lead to numerous changes and challenges in fundamentals of traditional transportation engineering. In this paper, we will mainly discuss the influence of CVIS on transportation engineering, and the associated scientific issues.
