What Role do Circadian Rhythms Play in Learning and Memory?

Abstract: Circadian rhythmicity in gene expression and physiological process has been observed both in the central nervous system and in the periphery, including the hippocampus. As a center for memory formation and storage, the hippocampus shows circadian rhythmicity in clock gene expression and synaptic plasticity. Circadian variation in performance of hippocampus-dependent memory task suggests a link between clock gene oscillation and behavioral response. Yet the discrepancy in time scale between fast information enc… Show more

“…Circadian rhythms are fundamental biological concepts that are conserved in multiple organisms. A network of circadian neurons in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster drives daily rest and activity rhythms [ 85 ]. In the central nervous system and on the periphery, including in the hippocampus, circadian rhythmicity in gene expression and physiological processes was observed.…”

“…To achieve the best results in personification it is wise to use not only user explicit characteristics but also nonexplicit ones, such as circadian rhythms for example. There are detailed studies of the effects of circadian rhythm on learning [2,3].…”
