What really matters in binge drinking: A dominance analysis of binge drinking psychological determinants among University students

Abstract: Highlights A dominance analysis of psychological variables associated to BD is proposed. Positional, inter-individual and intra-individual factors were investigated. The variables most associated to BD were enhancement motives and drinking identity. The second order variables associated with BD were subjective norm and social motives. Prevention actions may benefit of specifically targeting inter-individual variables.

“…This Special Issue gathers 11 original research and review articles that address different types of binge behaviors: binge drinking ( Deniel et al, 2021 , Gierski et al, 2020 , Herman et al, 2020 , Mange et al, 2021 , Werle et al, 2021 ), binge eating ( Prunell-Castañé et al, 2021 , Werle et al, 2021 ), binge watching ( Cordeiro et al, 2021 , Ort et al, 2021 , Rubenking and Bracken, 2021 , Werle et al, 2021 ), and binge-porn consumption (i.e., hypersexuality and problematic pornography use; Castro-Calvo et al, 2021 , Koós et al, 2021 ). These articles primarily consist of empirical studies that build on self-report questionnaires, but a few rely on behavioral assessments, ecological approaches (i.e., sampling experiences), or literature reviews.…”

“…In addition, most of the articles included in this Special Issue (6 of 11) contribute to a better understanding of the psychological processes (i.e., cognitive, affective, motivational, and interpersonal) involved in the etiology, development, and maintenance of binge behaviors. Through dominance analysis, Mange et al (2021) demonstrate that binge drinking appears to be mainly determined by enhancement motives and drinking identity, followed by subjective norm and social motives, thus calling for the focus of attention to be placed on interindividual psychological factors for the sake of elaborating prevention strategies. Other potential targets for prevention and intervention are also suggested by Herman et al (2020) , who highlight the combined role of difficulties in emotion processing (i.e., alexithymia) and trait impulsivity in binge drinking among university students.…”

“…the dominance analyses in this study consisted of 4095 (2 12 -1) regression models containing all possible combinations of predictors. Dominance analysis has been a popular method used by many researchers and practitioners in recent years to assess the relative contribution of a large set of predictors to a specific outcome (e.g., Gromping, 2007;Johnson & Lebreton, 2004;Mange et al, 2021;Peacock, 2021;Vize et al, 2019). Stata/SE v15.1 was used to prepare the data and conduct the analyses.…”

“…On the one hand, studies testing the effectiveness of MI target beneficiaries with heterogeneous psychological profiles (i.e., with distinct psychological determinants specific to their consumption) in an undifferentiated way. However, various determinants have been highlighted with regard to the problem of the practice of BD [ 12 ], and not all of them are necessarily addressed or considered in a MI approach. On the other hand, the MI acts on a first necessary step for change, meaning the awareness of a risky situation, but not on the strategies allowing the implementation of the desired change.…”

“…Thus, taking these two elements into consideration, we propose to combine the MI with a complementary module specifically targeting an important determinant in the context of alcohol use, namely impulsivity. The critical role of impulsivity has been identified in BD [ 12 ] and substance use in general [ 13 ]. Indeed, impulsivity, defined as a tendency for individuals to act prematurely without fully considering the consequences of their actions, is considered as a major factor associated with alcohol consumption and BD.…”
