Religious tourism: the journey so far

“…Explorations about gender and gendered dimensions in religious tourism are emerging and need to be mainstreamed (Jansen, 2012;Quinn & Smith, 2022), particularly around deeper examinations of use and experience of sacred space by different genders. The other dimension that needs attention is the local communities, as they have largely been discussed from the consideration of impacts rather than as providers and producers of religious tourism (Alipour et al, 2017;Terzidou et al, 2008); somehow local communities remain less conspicuous in the scholarship and need more careful and nuanced examination.…”
