What Needs Tell Us about User Experience

Abstract: Abstract. The present study explores the sources and consequences of fulfilling six fundamental human needs, namely Autonomy, Relatedness, Competence, Stimulation, Influence, and Security, through using interactive products and media. Each need refers to a distinct set of issues, such as according product attributes (e.g., "flexibility") and experiential consequences (e.g., "freedom of choice"). Besides the need-specific content, which helps to characterize and differentiate user experiences, the study reveals… Show more

“…In order to design for positive and meaningful experiences, we applied the theory of Experience Design using fundamental human needs [22] as a starting point for the design process. A needs perspective tries to clarify where the emotion, motivation, and meaning comes from [15], [26] and makes it easier to address meaningful experiences in specific contexts for specific target groups [26]. We used a research-based UCD method, in which focus group interviews with targeted end users were conducted at the front-end of the design process.…”

“…This applies to user experiences across life domains, including those in leisure and work activities [61]. Moreover, because they address the content of these experiences, psychological needs can be used as a basis for categorizing and distinguishing positive user experiences [62]. A needs typology provides designers with a lexicon of psychological needs they can use when communicating with clients, within design teams and with end-users and other stakeholders.…”
