Abstract. Past studies have shown that tropical forest regeneration on degraded farmlands is initially limited by lack of seed dispersal, but few studies have tracked changes in abundance and composition of seed rain past the first few years after land abandonment. We measured seed rain for 12 months in 10 6-9-year-old restoration sites and five mature, reference forests in southern Costa Rica in order to learn (1) if seed rain limitation persists past the first few years of regeneration; (2) how restoration treatments influence seed community structure and composition; and (3) whether seed rain limitation is contingent on landscape context. Each restoration site contained three 0.25-ha treatment plots: (1) a naturally regenerating control, (2) tree islands, and (3) a mixed-species tree plantation. Sites spanned a deforestation gradient with 9-89% forest area within 500 m around the treatment plots. Contrary to previous studies, we found that tree seeds were abundant and ubiquitous across all treatment plots (585.1 6 142.0 seedsÁm À2 Áyr À1 [mean 6 SE]), indicating that lack of seed rain ceased to limit forest regeneration within the first decade of recovery. Pioneer trees and shrubs comprised the vast majority of seeds, but compositional differences between restoration sites and reference forests were driven by rarer, large-seeded species. Large, animal-dispersed tree seeds were more abundant in tree islands (4.6 6 2.9 seedsÁm ) than control plots (0.2 6 0.1 seedsÁm À2 Áyr À1 ), contributing to greater tree species richness in actively restored plots. Planted tree species accounted for ,1% of seeds. We found little evidence for landscape forest cover effects on seed rain, consistent with previous studies. We conclude that seed rain limitation shifted from an initial, complete lack of tree seeds to a specific limitation on large-seeded, mature forest species over the first decade. Although total seed abundance was equal among restoration treatments, tree plantations and tree islands continued to diversify seed rain communities compared to naturally regenerating controls. Compositional differences between regenerating plots and mature forests suggest that large-seeded tree species are appropriate candidates for enrichment planting.

MICORRIZAS ARBUSCULARES NO CRESCIMENTO DE LEGUMINOSAS ARBÓREAS EM SUBSTRATO CONTENDO REJEITO DE MINERAÇÃO DE CARVÃORESUMO: O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da inoculação de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA) no crescimento, colonização micorrízica e absorção de P e elementos-traço em leguminosas arbóreas expostas a rejeito de mineração de carvão. Ensaios independentes para as leguminosas Mimosa scabrella Benth. (bracatinga), Mimosa bimucronata (DC.) Kuntze (maricá) e Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan (angicovermelho) foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com seis tratamentos. Foram avaliados cinco isolados de FMA autóctones de áreas de mineração (Acaulospora colombiana, Acaulospora morrowiae, Dentiscutata heterogama, Rhizophagus clarus e Rhizophagus irregularis), além de um tratamento controle não inoculado, com quatro repetições. Verificou-se que a colonização micorrízica foi superior a 60% para a bracatinga e o maricá, enquanto que, para o angico-vermelho, foi de no máximo 26%. De maneira geral, a inoculação de FMA favoreceu o crescimento das leguminosas arbóreas, atingindo incrementos de até 1430%. A absorção de fósforo foi beneficiada principalmente pela inoculação de A. colombiana, R. irregularis e A. morrowiae. Apesar de se verificar redução nos teores de elementos-traço na parte aérea das plantas, a inoculação de FMA ocasionou incrementos significativos no acúmulo de As, Cu, Zn e Cr para todas as leguminosas avaliadas. Desta forma, os FMA desempenham papel importante para o crescimento de espécies arbóreas em áreas de mineração de carvão, as quais apresentam ambientes pobres, degradados e muitas vezes contaminados. Five coal mine autochthonous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal isolates were tested, including Acaulospora colombiana, Acaulospora morrowiae, Dentiscutata heterogama, Rhizophagus clarus and Rhizophagus irregulars, aside from a control treatment, with four replications each. Results show that arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization was greater than 60% for Mimosa species, and up to 26% for Parapiptadenia. Developing a Cell-Based Spatial Optimization Model for Land-Use Patterns Planning

Abstract:This study developed a cell-based spatial optimization model compatible with the ArcGIS platform, termed Dynamically Dimensioned Search Landscape Optimization Planning model (DDSLOP), for landscape planning. The development of the proposed model was based on the Dynamically Dimensioned Search Algorithm, which can efficiently find an optimal global solution within the massive solution space inherent to multi-dimensional analysis. Therefore, the DDSLOP model can reveal landscape pattern scenarios suited to specific managerial purposes at a cellular level. To evaluate the DDSLOP model, we applied it to a landscape planning initiative that focused on the conservation of three bird species in the National Taiwan University Highland Experimental Farm (NTU-HEF). We compared the proposed model with the Land-Use Pattern Optimization-library (LUPOlib), which was used in the optimization of landscapes at a patch level. The results of the comparison revealed that our fine scale optimization method has better flexibility, and can therefore form landscape structures, which, overall, provides not only better individual habitats for the target species, but also landscape patterns that foster high habitat connectivity, both important aspects of conservation efforts.
