What Is Wrong with Digital Documents? A Conceptual Model for Structural Cross-Media Content Composition and Reuse

Abstract: Many of today's digital document formats are strongly based on a digital emulation of printed media. While such a paper simulation might be appropriate for the visualisation of certain digital content, it is generally not the most effective solution for digitally managing and storing information. The oversimplistic modelling of digital documents as monolithic blocks of linear content, with a lack of structural semantics, does not pay attention to some of the superior features that digital media offers in compa… Show more

“…Current digital formats are predominantly based on a digital emulation of printed media. They oversimplistically model digital documents as monolithic blocks of linear content and adopt the limitations of paper documents by unnecessarily replicating content via copy and paste operations (Signer, 2010) with the detrimental effects alluded to. This document-centric 'book-age' paradigm also compels us to experience our nonlinear holistic world via linear disciplinary-divided fragments (Schmitt, 2018a, p. 9).…”

“…Today's document formats often do not provide access to specific semantic subparts or embedded media types [30]. However, if we are able to get access to these document substructures, specific substructures or embedded media types can be associated with different modalities of interaction.…”
