What is the value of wild animal welfare for restoration ecology?

Abstract: The restoration community continues to discuss what constitutes good environmental stewardship. One area of tension is the extent to which the well‐being of wild animals should inform restoration efforts. We discuss three ways that the perspective of wild animal welfare can augment restoration ecology: strengthening people's relationship with nature, reinforcing biotic integrity, and reducing mechanistic uncertainty. The animal welfare movement elevates sentient animals as stakeholders and explores how environ… Show more

“…We therefore recommend practicing year-round 'naturalistic grazing' with no specified large-herbivore density, but resource-limited populations with minimum management intervention. Despite a thorough scientific foundation (ICMO2, 2010), this practice is known to stir animal welfare debates, and may over time jog our of wild animal welfare (Capozzelli et al, 2020). A practical solution to this challenge may be that large herbivores are removed or culled in the event that they fall below predefined body condition or animal welfare criteria, notably in small, fenced nature areas.…”

“…However, there appear to be ways for researchers, conservationists, farmers, and policymakers to reduce harms to non-human animals while pursuing their conservation goals. So, a precautionary approach to insect welfare is compatible with their aims (and, in some cases, may even help them achieve their aims: Capozzelli et al, 2020).…”

“…Offtake through regulated hunting can control populations and earn revenue if stakeholders accept the ethical implications. Alternatively, populations can be allowed to self-regulate through density dependence, with die-offs in harsh years (Fløjgaard et al, 2022), requiring full recognition of the implications for animal welfare (Capozzelli et al, 2020).…”
