What is the Midterm Survivorship and Function After Hip Resurfacing?

Abstract: Background Hip resurfacing arthroplasty is a common procedure that improves functional scores and has a reported survivorship between 95% and 98% at 5 years. However, most studies are reported from the pioneering rather than independent centers or have relatively small patient numbers or less than five years followup. Various factors have been implicated in early failure. Questions/purposes Our purposes were to determine: (1) the midterm survival of the BHR; (2) the function in patients treated with hip resurf… Show more

“…Our assessment of generic QoL (SF-12) demonstrated improvements on the physical and mental component scores comparable to the nonarthritic population. These outcomes support and underscore recent reports on WOMAC scores [25,38,39,41,57,59,69,70] and Oxford Hip Scores [31,36,[56][57][58] from other authors and patient populations. Our SF-12 results are in agreement with published SF-12 and SF-36 outcomes, which demonstrate restoration of generic QoL approaching that of the normal population [16,41,56,58] (Table 4).…”

“…The mean postoperative UCLA score value of 5.8 found in the current study was slightly below those reported by others. For example, Patel et al found a mean UCLA score of 6.8 at a mean follow-up of 62 months in a cohort of HRA patients [32], while Rahman et al reported a mean score of 7.5 after a mean follow-up of 6.6 years [33]. Whether our somewhat lower score values are attributable to different baseline characteristics, differences in follow-up time or to cross-cultural differences cannot be determined.…”

“…Midterm survivorship in hip resurfacing has been reported between 95% and 96% [17,29,37]. If the femoral component fails, it is often the result of femoral neck fracture or aseptic loosening.…”

“…Hip resurfacing is an alternative to THA for the young, active patient with reported midterm survivorship of 95% to 96% [17,29,37]. Advantages of hip resurfacing include preservation of metaphyseal and diaphyseal bone, improved joint stability, and favorable wear characteristics of a metal-on-metal articulation.…”
