What is the menu today in a subantarctic kelp food web from the Kerguelen Islands? Phytodetritus, phytoplankton and phytobenthos; not living kelp

Abstract: Kelp forests dominated by Macrocystis pyrifera are widely distributed in coastal waters from boreal, temperate and subantarctic regions. This widespread distribution may result in regional differences in food web structure and functioning. In temperate northern regions, where most studies on kelp forest benthic food webs have been conducted, kelp grazing is a welldocumented phenomenon and can lead to the overgrazing of M. pyrifera by sea urchins when their predators (e.g., sea otters) are absent. In contrast, … Show more

“…TABLE 5 Faunal functional diversity between transects conducted on hard substrates at Baie du Marin, with: functional richness (FRic), functional evenness (FEve), functional divergence (FDiv), functional redundancy (FR), Rao's quadratic entropy (RaoQ), and their respective geometric representations. (McClintock, 1994;Le Bourg et al, 2022). Baie du Marin rocky substrates are covered by high densities of tube-dwellers polychaetes such as the terebellid Lanice marionensis, on which the Aeolidiidae nudibranchs feed, and the sabellid Parasabella sp.…”
