This study investigated the use of Google Maps as an instructional tool in Earth Science. A conveniently sampled senior high school class (n=34) participated in a formative online Google Map activity. The students inferred the location of landforms usually associated with faults using the Terrain view of Google Maps during the pre-lecture and intervention phase. A short lecture explaining how these land features can possibly be deduced using Google Maps followed. After the lecture, the students re-observed the maps with Google Maps, reexamined their previous answers and modified them, if necessary. After the activity, the students answered a self-evaluation form (SEF) which sought to gather their insights regarding the use of Google Maps in their Earth science class. The results revealed that the majority of the respondents expressed positive attitudes toward using Google Maps in classroom learning. They have had meaningful engagement with this online geospatial tool in their lessons in Earth science. However, challenges such as slow internet connection and limited exposure and practice were also noted by the students. Future researchers may look into the application of Google Maps in other lessons or learning competencies, a wider coverage among schools, and the integration of other geotechnologies in teaching the Earth sciences.

Purpose COVID-19 played a crucial role in the development and enlargement of learning via electronic media. Still, the recent fourth industrial revolution [Industry 4.0 (I4.0)] paved the road toward Education 4.0. In this regard, several research challenges arise, involving the preparation of gamification strategies in online learning environments. In this sense, this paper aims to investigate the relationship between technologies of I4.0 and gamification practices in online learning around the world. Specifically, to categorize the studies of the scientific literature in the area into knowledge domains and the mention of I4.0 technologies and to verify the relationship of these technologies with the different educational levels. Design/methodology/approach The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis protocol was used as a research method with 130 papers included for full content analysis and obtained from the Web of Science. Findings The leading I4.0 technologies mentioned in the analyzed papers were simulation, Internet of Things and augmented/virtual reality, in this order. Although there are more mentioned technologies, the domain of knowledge to be applied and the educational level interfere in choosing these pillars. With this, the main findings of this relationship were exposed in a singular, modern, active, realist, technological framework to demonstrate how I4.0 relates to the practice of gamification in online educational environments. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that brings together the relationship of gamification applied in e-learning with I4.0 technologies.

This paper describes an empirical study (n=352) into Greek in-service primary school teachers’ conceptions of concepts of force and weight. A closed multiple-choice questionnaire is given to primary school teachers as a tool to explore conceptions, which has been used in previous research. The study population consisted of teachers at primary schools who work in the Greek education directorate. The research data is related to the teachers’ years of service, from where it is studied whether their teaching experience changes/reduces the alternative conceptions. The research data investigated whether the teachers’ teaching experience alters or reduces alternative conceptions based on their years of service. Years of service correlate statistically significantly with most questions. In particular, our results indicate that the alternative conceptions of teachers, reflecting misconceptions and preconceptions, reduce as the years of professional experience increase. Our study can be employed in science teaching, the design of Curricula, and teachers’ professional development.
