What information counts at the moment of practice? Information practices of renal nurses

Abstract: Exploring how nurses engage with information, and the role the information plays in situating and enacting epistemic, social and corporeal knowledge into everyday nursing practice is instructive because it indicates that nurses must engage with all three modalities in order to perform effectively, efficiently and holistically in the context of patient care.

“…friends, family. Contingent intermediaries crossed both formal and informal, and represent a source of contingent information, which may only be offered at the moment of practice or be incidental to the intended information need (Bonner and Lloyd 2011). Similar findings related to the contingency of information provision were noted by Fisher, Durrance and Hinton (2004), leading these authors to locate contingency in the construct of information grounds.…”

“…This differential exposure may skew perceptions about ideal modalities for patients and the ideal modality distribution for the UHN. In keeping with this hypothesis, a qualitative study demonstrated that practical experience was the most influential factor in nursing practice patterns [33]. As nurses indicated that they preferred practical continuing education (CE) to learn about dialysis modality selection, providing them with hands-on exposure to both the CHD and home dialysis unit (i.e.…”

“…Empirical studies of emergency workers (2009), renal nurses (Bonner and Lloyd, 2011) and people with chronic health conditions, supply illustrative examples (see also Olsson, 2016). She states, "Corporeal information can be understood as information that is experienced through the situated and sensory body as it interacts with material objects, artefacts and other people that inhabit the same landscape" (Lloyd 2010).…”
