The influence of biodiversity and age of agroforestry systems (AFS) on the provision of ecosystem services, such as nutrient cycling, needs to be better understood to support management practices that promote such services. This study aimed to quantify and compare litter stock and the physical and chemical attributes of soil in four AFSs with different ages and arrangements to a secondary forest (FLO) in the Eastern Amazon. Litter stock did not differ among the AFSs, but the youngest AFS was lower (5.73 ± 1.04 Mg ha− 1) than in FLO (11.42 ± 2.44 Mg ha− 1). Similarities were found between FLO and the oldest AFS for most of the soil chemical attributes. The soil pH in AFSs was higher than in FLO in the surface layer, and the organic matter content of FLO did not differ from 2 and 51-year-old AFSs. The Al content and aluminum saturation of younger and 26 years-old AFSs were lower than in FLO. Particle density and total porosity did not differ among ecosystems, while soil density in the two younger AFSs was higher than in FLO. According to PCA results, variables such as organic matter, CECpH7, H + Al, Al content, and m % tended to be higher in FLO and oldest AFS. It was evident that the maturity and diversity of AFSs are relevant factors for Amazonian agroforests, as they offer positive impacts on ecosystem functionality, such as nutrient cycling and water retention.

The Amazon is the largest drainage basin on Earth and contains a wide variety of abiotic landscape features. In spite of this, the geodiversity in this basin has not yet been objectively evaluated. We address this knowledge gap by combining a meta-analysis of an existing global geodiversity map and its components with a systematic literature review, to identify the key characteristics of geodiversity in the Amazon drainage basin (ADB). We also evaluate how these global geodiversity component maps, that are based on the geology, geomorphology, soils and hydrology, could be refined to better reflect geodiversity in the basin. Our review shows that geology—through lithological diversity and geological structures—and hydrology—through hydrological processes that influence geomorphology and soil diversity—are the main determinants of geodiversity. Based on these features, the ADB can be subdivided into three principal regions: (i) the Andean orogenic belt and western Amazon, (ii) the cratons and eastern Amazon, and (iii) the Solimões-Amazon river system. Additional methods to map geomorphological and hydrological diversity have been identified. Future research should focus on investigating the relationship between the geodiversity components and assess their relationship with biodiversity. Such knowledge can enhance conservation plans for the ADB. This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue ‘Geodiversity for science and society’.

Nutrient cycling, guaranteed by the decomposition of litter, stands out as an essential process for maintaining Amazonian ecosystems. Studies on the litter layer on the soil surface are indispensable, primarily because they help provide information about functional and structural aspects of the ecosystem. Therefore, to define parameters related to the storage and production of litter and nutrients in Amazonia, we conducted a qualitative and quantitative analysis of articles in academic publications developed in Amazonia in the last 40 years (1980- 2019). We identified 83 articles, with the majority (85.39%) developed in Brazil. We found that 67% of these studies were related to the litterfall method and only 11.24% were related to both collection methods (litter stock and litterfall). The litter stock ranged from 4.94 ± 2.07 Mg ha-1 to 11.05 ± 4.67 Mg ha-1 for Agroforestry Systems (AFS) and Mixed Plantation (MIP), respectively. While litterfall ranged from 2.09 ± 1.14 Mg ha-1 year-1 to 9.01 ± 6.09 Mg ha-1 year-1 for pasture ecosystems (PAS) and AFS. The litter nutrients in Amazonia follow the following decreasing order: N>Ca>K>Mg>P. Our results indicate the need for more attention and investment in Amazonian forest research, so that more studies on the subject may be developed, especially those focusing on ecological restoration.
