The accumulation of scientific knowledge is an important objective of information systems (IS) research. Although different review approaches exist in the continuum between narrative reviews and meta-analyses, most reviews in IS are narrative or descriptive-with all related drawbacks concerning objectivity and reliability-because available underlying sources in IS do typically not fulfil the requirements of formal approaches such as meta-analyses. To discuss how cumulative IS research can be effectively advanced using a more formalized approach fitting the current situation in IS research, in this paper, we point out the potential of stylized facts (SFs). SFs are interesting, sometimes counterintuitive patterns in empirical data that focus on the most relevant aspects of observable phenomena by abstracting from details (stylization). SFs originate from the field of economics and have been successfully used in different fields of research for years. In this paper, we discuss their potential and challenges for literature reviews in IS. We supplement our argumentation with an application example reporting our experience with SFs. Because SFs show considerable potential for cumulative research, they seem to be a promising instrument for literature reviews and especially for theory development in IS.

The new complex digital and information services systems and industries are calling for new transdisciplinary approaches on how to achieve technical, social, and cultural knowledge and skills to serve future needs of the industry and society. The leading digital industry is in demand of engineer's with knowledge and capabilities to collaborate and move between highly complex digital business and technical systems domains. The new reality is under constant transformation, highly intangible and non-linear interconnected system. Transformative digital business innovations, rapidly evolving business models, architectures enabled business model scalability and ultra large-scale of systems are the new characteristics of this software-dominantlogic. This paper aims at covering contemporary challenges of the interdisciplinary in business, service, software and systems engineering by analyzing different research ontologies and curriculum models. The paper analyses recent Computer Science (CS) and Information Systems (IS) curriculum developments and reflects through different ontologies and recent research. Paper uses Service Design and Engineering (SDE) as a didactic and curriculum model for future Information Systems Engineering (ISE) and Business andInformation Systems Engineering (BISE). The new curriculums serve the needs of global information start-ups, businesses, governments, and societies. This paper aims at describing the ontological foundations and conflicts, the axiology of the new curriculum model and proposes an integrated multi-ontology as the foundation for BISE new curriculum.

Information overload research in accounting: a systematic review of the literature

This paper reviews literature in the domain of information overload in accounting. The underlying psychological concepts of information load (as applied in accounting research) are summarized, and a framework to discuss findings in a structured way is proposed. This framework serves to make causes, consequences, and countermeasures transparent. Variables are further clustered into major categories from information processing research: input, process, and output. The main variables investigated are the characteristics of the information set, especially the number of information cues as an input variable; the experience of the decision-maker, the decision time, decision rule, and cue usage as process variables; and measures related to decision quality (i.e., accuracy, consensus, consistency) and related to selfinsight (calibration, confidence, feeling of overload) as output variables. The contexts of the respective research papers are described, and the operationalization of variables detailed and compared. We employ the method of stylized facts to evaluate the strength of the links between variables (number of links, direction and significance of relationship). The findings can be summarized as follows: most articles focus on individual decision-making in the domain of external accounting, with financial distress predictions constituting a large part of these. Most papers focus on input and output variables with the underlying information processing receiving less attention. The effects observed are dependent on the type of information input and the task employed. Decision accuracy is likely to decrease once information load passes a certain threshold, while decision time and a feeling of overload increase with increasing information load. While experience increases decision accuracy, the results on decision time and consensus are conflicting. Most articles have not established a significant link between changes in information load and changes in decision confidence. Relative cue usage, consensus, consistency, and calibration decline with increasing information load. Available time has a rather positive effect on decision accuracy and consensus. Based on these findings, implications for practice and future research are derived.
