What hinders the uptake of computerized decision support systems in hospitals? A qualitative study and framework for implementation

Abstract: BackgroundAdvanced Computerized Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) assist clinicians in their decision-making process, generating recommendations based on up-to-date scientific evidence. Although this technology has the potential to improve the quality of patient care, its mere provision does not guarantee uptake: even where CDSSs are available, clinicians often fail to adopt their recommendations. This study examines the barriers and facilitators to the uptake of an evidence-based CDSS as perceived by diverse h… Show more

“…However, staff reported concerns with increased workload and documentation burden, due to duplication of systems, as barriers to the adoption of G‐MEDSS. This finding echoes other studies reporting the impact of workflow as an issue influencing use of CCDSS . These findings highlight that a CCDSS needs to be integrated into existing documentation systems within RACFs to ensure successful implementation in routine practice.…”

“…This finding echoes other studies reporting the impact of workflow as an issue influencing use of CCDSS. 21,24 These findings highlight that a CCDSS needs to be integrated into existing documentation systems within RACFs to ensure successful implementation in routine practice. Also, participants who preferred to preserve the status quo showed resistance to the use of the CCDSS.…”

“…As with any other medical device, CDSSs require stringent acceptance testing, commissioning, and quality assurance by the local site . In addition, an effective implementation plan is key to overcome barriers for a successful CDSS . In the present review, we have summarized the guidance collected from the literature in order to provide CDSS implementers.…”

“…The implementation of AI+CDSSs in Chinese clinical practice are not yet widespread and implemented are often not evaluated as most satisfactory. Some underlying issues and constraints were already acknowledged in prior work (25,26). In our study we explored the prioritized concerns and challenges which accompany the implementation of AI+CDSSs in China.…”
