“…Explicit teaching of words at a metalinguistic level is an important component of instruction (Westwood, ), yet it appeared to be absent in the pedagogical approaches adopted by the eight teachers in this study, thus potentially making it challenging for the students to learn English spelling. Furthermore, if teachers are able to identify the underlying causes of spelling difficulties by undertaking systematic spelling error analyses, and if they know how to teach spelling strategies beyond ‘sounding out', students may then be afforded opportunities to learn to apply a broader repertoire of strategies (Daffern, ).…”

Nonetheless, findings from several studies suggest that many teachers across English speaking countries do not feel adequately prepared and confident to teach spelling (Adoniou, ; Dockrell et al, ; Fresch, ; Herrington & Macken‐Horarik, ; Johnston, ; McNeill & Kirk, ).…”

“…Without adequate knowledge about language structure, teachers will not have the metalanguage needed to help them talk and think about language, or explain it clearly to children. Daffern (2017) has explored how teacher use of metalanguage in their teaching appears to help children talk and think about their spelling strategies. Without metalanguage, metacognition is compromised.…”
