Performance and quality of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and mixtures of both species grown with or without white clover (Trifolium repens L.) under cutting management Abstract There is increasing interest in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) in Western Europe and elsewhere, mainly because of its better drought resistance and yield potential compared with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Important drawbacks of tall fescue, compared with perennial ryegrass, are its lower digestibility and voluntary intake. Mixtures of both species might combine the advantages of each, and species interactions may eventually lead to transgressive overyielding. We compared the agronomic performance of tall fescue, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue-perennial ryegrass mixtures, as pure-grass swards or in association with white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Tall fescue-perennial ryegrass mixtures differed in the proportion and ploidy of the perennial ryegrass component. Yield, feed quality and botanical composition were measured in the 3 years after the sowing year. We found significant effects of ploidy of the ryegrass variety and of the proportion of ryegrass in the initial seed mixture on the botanical composition of the swards. Nevertheless, all swards were dominated by tall fescue at the end of the experiment. No overyielding of the mixtures compared with that of singlespecies swards was found, but feed quality was intermediate between that of the single-species swards. Mixed swards had better drought resistance than L. perenne and higher feeding quality than F. arundinacea swards.

SummaryLolium perenne L. (Lp) is one of the most important and valuable forage plants in grasslands and an indispensable component of seed mixtures for meadows, pastures, ley farming, and re-seeding measures. A set of 39 different cultivars of Lp assigned to early, intermediate, and late maturing types were harvested and analyzed in weekly intervals during the first growth at AREC Raumberg-Gumpenstein, Austria. Significant differences between the heading groups were found with a time lag of 6 days for crude protein content and of up to 11 days for digestibility of organic matter and energy concentration. The early heading cultivars significantly differed from the other two groups, which performed comparably and were more resilient in terms of quality aspects for a longer time. Within all three heading groups, a strong variation could be noticed, leading to some unexpected overlapping. Our results indicate that the current assignment of Lp cultivars to the heading groups is imprecise and should be improved by advanced recordings and by analyses during the time of the official variety testing period. This may lead to a more sufficient selection of Lp cultivars for grassland mixtures, and therefore, increase the quality of home-grown forage.

Quantitative Traits Breeding for Multifunctional Grasslands and Turf

Grasslands and forage crops are major components of the agri-food systems worldwide and must provide a wide range of ecosystem services, from the production of feed and food to the preservation of the environments. This paper presents the stakes associated to the three pillars of sustainability, with special attention given to the farmers and their expectations regarding farming systems. We suggest that risk aversion of farmers must be especially taken into account for the defi nition of new production systems and for the implementation of innovations. Implementation of production systems combining annual grain crops and perennial forage crops or associating plant and animal productions either at farm or territory scales make it possible to maintain production and economical performance and to improve environmental performances. The production systems as well as the breeding and registration systems are involved in lock-in situations that are a complex equilibrium of stakeholders and their activity around a series of standards of production and utilisation. These situations hinder the implementation of "disruptive" innovation that could move the systems to higher levels of productivity and environmental service. The conditions to escape from such situations are explained. Innovative conception theory provides a frame for identifying new concepts and for searching knowledge to support those who are creating the innovations. Adoption of innovations by farmers is a critical issue and tools to facilitate the implementation of innovation by farmers are identifi ed, especially work in farmers groups, advisory systems and, on a long term perspective, training and education. It is also necessary to consider the heterogeneity of farmer communities. The early adopters must be targeted as they are opinion leaders who will fi rst implement the innovations and disseminate them to neighbours and partners.
