What Factors Influence the Production of Orthopaedic Research in East Africa? A Qualitative Analysis of Interviews

Abstract: Background Research addressing the burden of musculoskeletal disease in low-and middle-income countries does not reflect the magnitude of the epidemic in these countries as only 9% of the world's biomedical resources are devoted to addressing problems that affect the health of 90% of the world's population. Little is known regarding the barriers to and drivers of orthopaedic surgery research in such resource-poor settings, the knowledge of which would help direct specific interventions for increasing research … Show more

“…Research funding was one of the main barriers for conducting research. This is consistent with the findings from Nigeria amongst the ophthalmologists (7) and medical specialists (8) and East African orthopedic surgeons (6). Personal funds was the main source of funding for Nigerian ophthalmologists and medical specialist.…”

“…Most of the respondents were involved in research activities and a large majority was interested in research. The high interest in research amongst the ECSA ophthalmologist mirrors that of East African Orthopedic surgeons (6) but strikingly different to the poor research interest amongst the Nigerian Ophthalmologists (4). The authors of the Nigerian study felt that poor research interest amongst the Nigerian ophthalmologists is due to funding constraints and inadequate knowledge in research process which feature among the major barriers for conducting research in Nigeria.…”

“…Elliot et al have identified 19 barriers by conducting semi-structured interviews. 21 These barriers range from resource constraints (funding, lack of protected research time, access to literature) to research processes (lack of training, record keeping, mentoring) to institutional barriers (culture, trauma burden, lack of collaboration). Simba et al highlighted that despite the existence of adequate numbers of highly skilled researchers in Africa, the number of publications per faculty is low.…”

“…However, the lack of willingness of senior scientists and surgeons, and the lack of protected time are major limitations that must be addressed for this to be successful. 5,21,22 Bennett et al have suggested that mentoring could also be achieved by training mentors in the developed world. 24 Finally the SA Orthopaedic Journal should be encouraged to apply to be indexed on Medline for worldwide dissemination of African-based research.…”

“…The lack of quality data on the burden of global orthopedic trauma and the availability of care to manage trauma-related injuries impede the establishment of policies that prevent avoidable morbidity and mortality (Elliott et al, 2015). It is most appropriate that those who live and practice in the affected communities conduct the research, collect the data, and apply the results to their practice (Gosselin et al, 2009).…”
