What Does the ‘Postdigital’ Mean for Education? Three Critical Perspectives on the Digital, with Implications for Educational Research and Practice

Abstract: This paper examines what the term 'postdigital' might mean for education through the discussion of human-technology relationships. It begins with a summary of two general interpretations of the postdigital: firstly, to understand the 'post' as meaning simply 'posterior to' the digital, suggesting a different stage in the perception and use of technology; and secondly, to consider the 'post' as signalling a critical appraisal of the assumptions embedded in the general understanding of the digital. “…'blended learning' is often assumed to be a solution for students who are not able, or not inclined, to engage in face-to-face activities. But technology cannot be understood simply as a problem-solving 'tool', because it is 'embedded in, and entangled with, existing practices and systems' (Knox 2019), and cannot in itself enhance learning. “…The metrics that feed into institutional league tables and performance management of individuals are also facilitated by digital technologies. For these reasons, the advice offered by Knox (2019) to use the concept of the postdigital condition 'to highlight the need for educational practice and research to pay more attention to the ways digital technologies are shaping the core of education' (358) is a valuable one.…”

“…Because digitalization is no longer supplemental or marginal, but is now at the driving center of education, such issues are central. Knox (2019) contributes here to the thinking about technology against and after capitalism.…”
