Multiple evidence-based interventions (EBIs) have been developed to improve the completion of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening within Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and other safety net settings in marginalized communities. Little effort has been made, however, to evaluate their relative effectiveness across different clinical contexts and populations. To this end, we tested the relative effectiveness of three EBIs (mailed birthday cards, lay navigation, and provider-delivered education) among a convenience sample of 1252 patients (aged 50–75 years old, who were due for CRC screening and scheduled for a visit at one of three clinics within a network of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in the United States. To be eligible for the study, patients had to identify as African American (AA) or Latino American (LA). We compared the effects of the three EBIs on CRC screening completion using logistic regression. Overall, 20% of the study population, an increase from a baseline of 13%, completed CRC screening. Clinical demographics appeared to influence the effectiveness of the EBIs. Mailed birthday reminders appeared to be the most effective within the multi-ethnic clinic (p = 0.03), provider-delivered education within the predominantly LA clinic (p = 0.02), and lay navigation within the predominantly AA clinic (p = 0.03). These findings highlight the importance of understanding clinical context when selecting which evidence-based interventions to deploy.

The publication highlights the impact of historical trauma on collective memory and the formation of interpretations of national history in the United States. The trauma studies is one of the most important and disputable vectors of today’s historical researches in the USA. The traumatic events of American history, and especially of its certain communities (such as Afro-Americans, Native Americans), significantly influenced the formation of traditional historical narratives. Slavery, colonialism, violations of the rights of the indigenous population of the modern USA have been postponed in the collective memory of the multicultural American society and reflected on traditional approaches to the interpretation of history and its coverage in school textbooks. Almost a century, from the emergence of the first own history textbooks to the middle of the 20th century. traumatic events were glossed over and a whitewashed version of the past was presented, with a distorted interpretation of slavery and other sad moments in American history. It was discovered that there were many discussions in the American society focused on history interpretations and teaching of history at schools. Both North and South of the USA were trying to transform main narratives of the American History by their own vision. However, we can state the evolution of traditional approaches: at the beginning of the constructing of own historical narratives such issues as slavery and conquest of the Native Americans were silenced as a problematic issues, but now these issues as well as history of the other social groups (except of dominated narratives about white free men) are essential part of modern narratives. Opened discussion is a manifestation of awareness and collective work on historical traumas which are aimed at the consolidation of American society.

Making Peace with the Haunted Past: On the Role of Public Narratives in Treating Historical Trauma

This article is dedicated to investigating the role of public narratives in ameliorating historical trauma. My purpose is to summarize the parts of the literature on this topic that I find the most insightful and then critically engage with and try to elevate some of their discussions. The method of this study is a review of the most pertinent literature. The finding is that the public narratives which frame peoples experience of traumatic events are crucial in healing historical trauma and maintaining peace in the future. Overall, it is recommended that both the victims and the perpetrators can improve the situation by adjusting the public narratives that frame the experience of historical trauma in their culture. The victim group can reorient its focus to universal humanism instead of sticking to antagonistic narratives against the perpetrators. The perpetrator group needs to demonstrate in their public narratives their willingness to acknowledge the past wrongdoings, which is the prerequisite for the victim group to form non-antagonistic narratives.
