What does it mean to “go beyond race”?

Abstract: In this commentary piece, we argue that we must interrogate the meaning of race and examine why and how race does matter in different societies across contexts before we can even consider moving “beyond race.” We understand race as fundamentally related to power, privilege, and oppression; we discuss how we cannot go “beyond race” in the face of persistent racisms, hierarchies and maintenance of power and privilege. We address that demographic changes in itself does not bring us “beyond race” and the importanc… Show more

“…While race is a concept for explaining human differences, racism originated from the political practices that perpetuate such categories of difference, sustained through multiple, varied, and contextually specific social, political, and economic constructions within a nation-state (Bakan and Dua, 2014: 6). So racism can be expressed either as an explicit belief in racial superiority or as a structural system of racial discrimination (Bonnett, 2000: 4; Törngren and Suyemoto, 2022: 2). Critical race theorists do not just focus on analysing the contemporary structure of racism but are also concerned with how racism is reproduced (Meghji, 2022: 3).…”

“…However, a good starting point is to explain what we mean by race and racism. Whereas race is considered a constructed category of difference based on phenotypical, cultural, and other specific characteristics ascribed to designated groups (James and Burgos, 2022), racism embodies ideas and practices that establish, maintain, and perpetuate such categories of difference (Bakan and Dua, 2014: 6; Törngren and Suyemoto, 2022: 2). However, enacting the racial categories of difference through talk and text is a constituent of ‘racialized social systems’ (Bonilla-Silva, 1997: 469).…”

“…In this article we specifically focus on diversity in terms of race, ethnicity and gender ( Dobbin and Kalev, 2022 ; Zheng, 2022 ). Race and ethnicity, both understood as socially constructed categories, are defined in numerous and contesting ways by different scholars, especially between Europe and North America ( Banton, 2015 ; Morning and Maneri, 2022 ; Osanami Törngren and Suyemoto, 2022 ). In this article, we understand race as socially constructed system of hierarchy and power where phenotypes and other visible differences are deployed as boundaries of groups ( Lentin, 2020 ; Osanami Törngren and Suyemoto, 2022 ), and ethnicity as cultural origin and heritage.…”

Here, we operationalize both race and ethnicity as analytical categories to understand how CVs representing native-born Swedes with and without a migratory background, i.e., how White Ethnic Swedes, White non-Ethnic Swedes and Non-White Swedes, are treated at the initial stage of the hiring process.…”

“…By acknowledging race as a socially constructed entity involving categorization based on physical appearance or social relations (Roth, 2018), its effects, such as racism and discrimination, are tangible . The reciprocal interaction between the socialization of racial meanings, broader structures (e.g., norms and values), and resulting racialized understandings forms an ideological, cultural, and normative framework (Murji & Solomos, 2005;Osanami Törngren & Suyemoto, 2022).…”
