What do we know of post‐thrombotic syndrome? Current status of post‐thrombotic syndrome in adults

Abstract: Keywords • deep vein thrombosis • leg swelling • chronic venous insufficiency SummaryThe post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a common but not completely understood and rarely studied sequela of an acute deep vein thrombosis. The influence of several risk factors on the incidence or severity of PTS is controversial. The therapeutic options for PTS are still limited. Appropriate medical compression stockings can reduce the incidence (-50 %) as well as the severity of PTS. In the case of severe, symptomatic PTS, th… Show more

“…This syndrome is more commonly observed in male gender, obese, and elderly patients [15]. The influence of several risk factors on the incidence of PTS is till controversial [16]. The determinants of postthrombotic manifestations include the rate of recanalization, 2 ISRN Vascular Medicine the global extend of reflux, the anatomic distribution of reflux and obstruction, the recurrent thrombotic events, and thrombophilia.…”

“…These processes explain the features of chronic venous insufficiency characteristic of PTS. 25 The above description applies largely to lower limb PTS pathophysiology. Upper limbs are relatively protected from PTS due to abundant collaterals, lack of reflux and a shorter hydrostatic column.…”

“…PTS is characterized by obstruction of the deep venous system, which can be associated with venous valve incompetence, venous hypertension, and pathological reflux. Given the complexity of the pathogenesis and, in particular, the treatment of PTS, we would like to refer the interested reader to the following review articles .…”
