What Do U.K. Orthopedic Surgery Patients Think About PROMs? Evaluating the Evaluation and Explaining Missing Data

Abstract: The NHS routinely evaluates the quality of life of patients receiving hip or knee replacement surgery using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), but some hospital completion rates are only 30%, restricting data usefulness. Statistics limit insights into how and why data are missing, so qualitative methods were used to explore this issue. Observation periods preceded semistructured interviews with 34 preoperative patients attending an orthopedic outpatient clinic. Interview themes covered: completion time… Show more

“…We do not yet know whether there are substantive benefits to use of ePROs over regular communications and patient assessments, a question that is being raised and investigated not only within the renal context but globally. 2,52-54 A clinical trial comparing usual care to that incorporating ePROs routinely into practice would help us address this question.…”

“…Despite this, timing PROMs collection after consultation has been shown to improve PROMs completion rates. 33 34 Our study achieved a completion rate of 91%, well above the expected rate of 80%. 34 Third, the analytic technique used, cluster analysis, is characterized by a lack of prior knowledge of the underlying structure of the group tested.…”

“…Secondly, the timing of PROMs collection after the decision to undergo ACL reconstruction in our study could influence individual scores. Despite this, timing PROMs collection after consultation has been shown to improve PROMs completion rates 28,29 . Our study achieved a completion rate of 91%, well above the expected rate of 80% 29 .…”
