What do Canadian uro-oncologists believe patients should know about androgen deprivation therapy?

Abstract: There is little consensus among physicians regarding what to tell patients when prescribing this treatment. The lack of agreement among physicians may partially explain the lack of awareness of ADT side effects by patients and partners. The current findings may help guide strategies for the design, evaluation, and implementation of educational interventions for both physicians and patients that will better prepare patients to recognize, adapt to, and overcome ADT side effects.

The sexual health counsellors are psychology residents who have completed coursework in sexual health and cancer (for example, ipode and sharetraining) 33,34 . Additionally, to reinforce "real world" experience, the sexual health counsellors shadow and are shadowed for several months by senior pcrc staff.…”

“…ADT is most commonly administered in the form of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone agonists (LHRHa) and is associated with many adverse effects that reduce the quality of life of prostate cancer patients ( 5 - 11 ). Our previous research has indicated a gap in patient knowledge about these adverse effects ( 12 ), which can influence patients’ ability to implement management strategies to mitigate these side effects. Tran et al .…”
