What Brings Intentions to Mind? An In Situ Study of Prospective Memory

Abstract: In a naturalistic study, we aimed to uncover the relationship between thinking about and remembering intentions. Electronic badges allowed us to track the activities of subjects within their work environment. Over two weeks, subjects were asked to respond using a button on their badges (1) every two hours (Time task); (2) whenever they were in a particular room (Place task). In addition, whenever they thought about the task, they were asked to indicate this with their badges. Although subjects thought about th… Show more

“…In a naturalistic study of prospective memory (Ellis, & Nimmo-Smith, 1993) participants were more likely to report having involuntary recollections (i.e., rehearsals) of the to-be-performed intentions when they were not concentrating on the task at hand (see also Sellen, Louie, Harris, & Wilkins, 1997). On the other hand, Giambra (1995) found that the occurrence of TUITs during an ongoing laboratory vigilance task decreased as the frequency of the to-be-detected targets increased.…”

“…An example is the vision of ''ubiquitous computing'', in which objects would be equipped with unique identities and given the ability to communicate with and actively support the user (Weiser 1991). A well-designed environment can enhance proactive memory (Sellen et al 1996) by deliberately bringing previous intentions to mind in the right context.…”

“…In a naturalistic study, Sellen, Louie, Harris, and Wilkins (1997) showed that there was an increase in thinking about the PM intention in everyday contexts during natural transition periods between tasks. It is possible that the Raven's Matrices provided several natural transitions either between problems or when an individual took a mental break from a problem and thus may have promoted thinking about their PM intention.…”
