This study was designed to investigate the awareness regarding global warming among the College of Science students at University of Bahrain. A total of 143 science students were examined using a questionnaire that covered three aspects of global warming including causes, impacts, and solutions. The study included 51, 28, 40 and 24 students from the departments of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics respectively. The results have shown that 55 ± 10.18% of all students examined answered the questions correctly of which 51 ± 10.28% were in the first year, while 60 ± 7.4% were in their fourth year indicating a direct positive impact of university education. A significant dependence (p 6 0.05) was recorded between first and fourth year students' answers. The results have shown that fourth year biology students were the most knowledgeable, a fact that can be attributed to their academic curriculum. Therefore, the study has recommended integrating environmental concepts into the university curriculum for all students irrespective of their academic specialization in order to increase the environmental awareness.

In order to graduate and obtain a master's degree or doctorate, a post-graduate student must conduct research process. The post-graduate research process has challenged many students and some students leave the course for a certain period while others failed to complete their research. This study was conducted to explore the major problems faced by post-graduate students in Malaysia to conduct a research. The researchers used qualitative research design using a semi-structured interview method. The instrument of this study is the interview protocol. Interview participants were selected using the purposive sampling method. The participants in this study were 31 people consist of twelve Master Degree and ten PhD students who failed to complete their studies in the social science field in public universities in Malaysia. In addition, the participants also consist of supervisors who have had experience in supervising post-graduate students for over 10 years ie nine Professors. Data from participants were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Based on the results of the qualitative study, it has been found that there are six common factors related to the problems faced by post-graduate students in Malaysia during the research processes such as knowledge, personal problems, personality, management, thinking and reading. Besides, this study found that the effects of the problems faced by post-graduate students during the research process that is of no interest, no focus, stress, running out of ideas, do not achieve the desired targets, ongoing concerns, loss of commitment, slow in complete the research and failed to complete the study.

Purpose The explosion of social media use such as Facebook among higher education students is deemed to have great potential in widely disseminating environmental sustainability awareness. The paper aims to capture, summarise, synthesise and comment on the role of social media to garner interest of students and staff on environmental sustainability issues. Design/methodology/approach Systematic literature review technique is adopted, and three selected online databases were searched for relevant papers for review. Specific data were extracted from each paper, and the discussion section was based on the developed research questions. Findings Higher education needs to fully leverage the ubiquity of social media to extend how environmental sustainability is viewed by the students and staff. Sustainability practices conducted at the university level such as recycling, reduction of electricity and water consumptions and paper reduction in classroom and used to engage students on environmental matters. For staff, social media can be leveraged as to convey the university policy and assist in their quest to become full-fledged green universities. Research limitations/implications Some of the limitations of this research include the lack of keyword search using synonyms or related terms equivalent to the term “awareness”, lack of forward and backward searches, and the papers were searched until end of 2013 only. Future research needs to take advantage of the current limitations to investigate this topic and be empirically supported by theories using quantitative, qualitative or mixed-method-based research. Future studies could also develop relevant frameworks to propose an effective use of social media for creating environmental sustainability awareness in higher education. Practical implications Propagations of environmental sustainability awareness in higher education would be more effective with the use of social media. Social implications In principle, the increase of environmental awareness level would increase the students’ good behavioural conduct on environmental sustainability. Originality/value While the broad topic of environmental sustainability in higher education is widely discussed, the role of social media in shaping environmental sustainability awareness is still under researched. This situation provides a significant potential for exploration by sustainability researchers to craft their investigation on the effective role of social media in creating environmental awareness in higher education.
