Background and Design:In clinical practice, dermatology specialists usually encounter misdiagnosis and inappropriate management approaches of other specialists for several dermatological diseases. This study aims to investigate the knowledge, diagnosis and management trends of family physicians in primary care on common dermatological diseases and their opinions about dermatology education. Materials and Methods: A multicenter study was conducted in six cities in Turkey including a total of 302 family physicians in primary care using an 82-item questionnaire through in-person interview. The questionnaire aimed at identifying demographic characteristics of family physicians, knowledge on common dermatological diseases, and their diagnosis and management trends. Results: Out of 1414 family physicians, 302 (21.53%) subjects, who could be contacted and those accepted to respond the questionnaire, were included. 57.6% of participants reported that there was not a microscope, while 94.4% reported that potassium hydroxide solution was not available in their clinics. A higher rate of family physicians mentioned experience difficulties in the management of psoriasis and acne rosacea. The rate of family physicians, who assumed that hepatobiliary disorders and other visceral conditions play a role in the etiopathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and acne vulgaris and those who did not state an opinion about this issue, was high. Incorrect management trends for bacterial skin diseases and nail diseases were observed with higher rates. Conclusion: It is recommended that knowledge should be reinforced through both undergraduate and continuous medical education and, skills of family physicians on the management of dermatological diseases should be improved. Lisa Gaye Sullivan BBus-Marketing A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2017Medicine Faculty ii Abstract Objectives: With the ever increasing use of online learning, a systemic review of randomized clinical trials from January 2000 to October 2014 was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of education delivery for CME/CPD between face-to-face and online (including blended) learning modalities in healthcare practitioners (HCPs).Settings: Thirteen studies fit the inclusion criteria and of these four were from North America, two from Iran, two from Asia, four from Europe and one from Australia.Populations varied with five of the studies being conducted amongst primary care physicians (GPs), one with occupational physicians, five with nurses, one with allied health including physiotherapists, occupational therapists and exercise physiologists and one with a mixture of scientists and physicians.Interventions: The interventions used across the studies varied with eleven of the studies comparing face-to-face with online learning, and only two studies comparing blended with face-to-face learning. There were no studies comparing blended with online learning only.Outcomes Measures: The predominant outcomes measured by ten of the thirteen studies focused on knowledge gain and skills with eight of these also reviewing acceptability and satisfaction with the course. Knowledge gain was mostly assessed through pre and post-testing of knowledge immediately before and immediately post-intervention although several of the studies did include additional post-testing at two weeks, three months and six months.Only one study assessed preference for learning styles for future CME activities and found that all those in the web-based group (100%) and 97% of the face-to-face group wanted to stay with the same learning medium as they had experienced in the intervention.Results: Of the eleven studies comparing online with face-to-face education, all found similar and usually lasting improvements in knowledge gain from baseline with both groups suggesting that online learning was comparable or at least as effective as onsite or face-to-face training. Increased knowledge, attitudes (perception of confidence) or change in practice were found in three of the studies [1-3] with another two assessing disease detection, diagnosis and management or concordance with guidelines.iii Discussion: Although numerous studies have been conducted comparing the effectiveness of online learning or the effectiveness of face-to-face learning in CME/CPD delivery for HCPs, it appears this is the first review that has looked specifically at studies comparing the two modalities.Conclusions: Further comparative research of the different delivery modalities is required. Background: Skin-related conditions are the frequent cause of doctors' consultations in primary care. Methods: Based on nationwide data bank information of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, we analysed the 20 most frequent main diagnoses for each ICD-10 category of all general practitioners' visits in the public health care in Finland over the years 2015-2019. Results: The total amount of doctor's visits was 19 204 613 of which 1 489 228 consultations (7.80%) had a skin-related condition as the main diagnosis. The most frequent skin-related conditions were eczematous eruptions, bacterial skin infections and benign skin neoplasms accounting for 749 351 consultations (50.32%). The spectrum of skin-related conditions was diverse, with a large quantity of rarer diagnoses. Some diagnoses showed significant proportional changes. Conclusions:The results demonstrate that a limited amount of conditions comprises most of the skin-related consultations in primary care in Finland. Undergraduate education in dermatology should concentrate on the most frequent conditions seen by general practitioners, but also address the wide range of skin problems.This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.
