What are predictors of impaired quality of life in patients with hypoparathyroidism?

Abstract: Context Hypoparathyroidism (hypoPT) is a rare endocrine disorder. Little is known about what factors are associated with potential quality of life (QOL) impairments. Design HypoPT patients at a minimum of 6 months' post diagnosis were invited to participate in an online survey through their treating physician or through self‐help organisations Methods Impairments of clinical importance in QOL were considered present if the score of the respective functioning scale of the European Organization for Research and … Show more

“…A systematic review of more than 372 studies 25 identified only five studies assessing quality of life in patients with hypoparathyroidism 19,23,[26][27][28] , all of which reported low QoL in this population. Other recent studies also demonstrate that hypoparathyroidism is a disease that negatively affects QoL [29][30][31][32] . Seven of the studies assessed QoL with the SF-36 19,[26][27][28][29][30][31] ; the scores obtained were compared against the normative reference range in four of these studies 19, 27, 28, Astor et al 19 , Cusano et al 28 and Kontogeorgos et al 31 demonstrated that the presence of hypoparathyroidism affected all eight SF-36 domains.…”

“…Symptoms of hypoparathyroidism have been shown to have negative effects across several domains (40). In a questionnaire to 264 hypoparathyroid patients post-thyroid surgery, Buttner et al, found significant impairments in social, physical, cognitive and emotional functioning leading to an impaired quality of life (41). In response to this complication, certain centers are incorporating parathyroid autofluorescence into their practice as a means for improving the detection of these glands over visualization alone (30).…”
