What and who is an Antarctic ambassador?

Abstract: AbstractThe term “Antarctic ambassadorship” is increasingly used to represent an individual’s connection to Antarctica and their subsequent advocacy. However, there is little clarity regarding the concept. To address this, we combined a literature review with an expert elicitation workshop. We argue that (i) the concept of Antarctic ambassador has been understood in myriad ways; (ii) Antarctic ambassadors have a connection to, knowledge of and passion for Antarctica; (iii) they… Show more

“…For example, a potential global consequence of polar tourism may be an increased environmental awareness and greater adoption of pro-environmental behaviours by tourists who visited the Polar Regions and obtained a sense of their fragility (Hehir et al, 2021). These potential positive impacts have been readily adopted by the tourism sector under the concept of ambassadorship (Alexander et al, 2019). However, a deeper understanding is needed regarding whether and how experiences and memories acquired during a polar journey might trigger positive long-term behavioural and attitudinal changes (Miller et al, 2020;Cajiao et al, 2022;Powell et al, 2012).…”

“…Other than the ecological impacts, there are also social dimensions of Antarctic tourism. The most notable studies in this topic are related to cognitive and affective outcomes from the Antarctic experience [31][32][33], impacts of tourism diversification [10], tourists' perceptions [34][35][36], and the Antarctic ambassadorship concept [37,38]. These studies have emphasized the experiential, learning and pro-environmental outcomes produced by the Antarctic experiences and their potential importance in contributing to the conservation of the continent.…”

“…These programs focus on the different geographic areas and are anchored to diverse institutional frameworks (Table 1), but share; however, they have in common a super-national approach and an awareness-raising breath. All the programs valorize the networking of ambassadors as all citizens of One Ocean (Wilcox and Aguirre, ( 2004)), sharing sustainable behaviors and reinforcing the bonds between the ocean, conceived as an entity per se and not just as a void space among lands, and the citizens (Alexander et al, 2019). Thus, they support the development of Ocean ethics.…”
