Wetting behavior of zirconia nanotubes

Abstract: In this work, we investigate the wettability of octadecylphosphonic acid (OPA) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified ZrO2 nanotubes (ZrNT) of varied morphologies synthesized via electrochemical anodization of zirconium.

“…Nanotubes were synthesized by anodizing Zr-foil in an electrochemical cell, using a high-voltage potentiostat (Jaissle IMP 88-200 PC), connected to a digital multimeter (Keithley 2000) interfaced to a computer. [20] Anodization was conducted in a glycerol-based electrolyte containing 30 vol% formamide, 2 wt% NH4F (Merck) and 2 wt% distilled water, with a ramping potential of 1 Vs -1 from OCP. The potential was kept at 90 V for 1 h and, subsequently, at a reduced potential of 30 V for 30 min.…”

“…Nanotubes were synthesized via anodization, performed in a glycerol-based electrolyte containing 20-30vol% formamide, 2wt% NH 4 F (Merck) and 2wt% distilled water, using a high-voltage potentiostat (Jaissle IMP 88-200 PC), connected to a digital multimeter (Keithley 2000) interfaced to a computer. [19] All samples were rinsed thoroughly with ethanol after the anodization process and dried under a stream of N 2 . The substrate was annealed in a box-furnace t 450˚C for 1.5hrs in air.…”

“…[ 3 ]. Such nanostructured materials have attracted attention due to their chemical stability [30] , enhanced wettability [29] , biocompatibility, mechanical robustness, and their tendency to bio-mimic the ECM (extra-cellular matrix), promoting osseointegration to name a few functionalities[ [8][9][10][11] ]. In addition to a large inner volume, nanotubular structures consist of distant inner and outer surfaces that can be further modified with a range of drug molecules and proteins to elicit additional responsivity [ 12,13 ].…”

“…In dental implants Zirconia is particularly considered more suitable due to favorable properties such as white coloration, translucency, and generally good aesthetics[ [23][24][25]. A highly ordered array of ZrNT can be fabricated by electrochemical anodization of Zirconium in a fluoride-containing electrolyte with a defined dimension and geometry[ 13, [26][27][28][29][30] ].…”
