Wetlands for environmental protection

Abstract: This article presents an update on the research and practical demonstration of wetland-based treatment technologies for protecting water resources and environment covering papers published in 2019. Wetland applications in wastewater treatment, stormwater management, and removal of nutrients, metals, and emerging pollutants including pathogens are highlighted. A summary of studies focusing on the effects of vegetation, wetland design and operation strategies, and process configurations and modeling, for efficie… Show more

“…Also, wetlands are valuable elements of the environment and play an important role in environmental protection (Martinez-Guerra et al 2020). Due to their positive impact on the environment and mitigation of climate change effects, it is necessary to maintain wetlands as natural areas, not change them into industrial areas (which PV power plants also are).…”

“…Removal of pollutants, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, pesticides, pathogens, and other organic matter, etc., is governed by single or multiple complex processes simultaneously which occur in different regions of the CWs (Ghimire et al, 2019; Martinez‐Guerra et al, 2018, 2020). The brief description of most prevalent removal processes that occur in CWs is discussed in the following sections.…”
