Due to water scarcity and ready availability, treated wastewater in Central Asia is increasingly reused and seen as a valuable resource, requiring effective management with particular care for human health, environmental protection, and water security. Due to limited technical and economic support and poorly developed regulatory systems, many cities have inadequate wastewater treatment infrastructure. Improved wastewater effluent management is paramount due to its relationship with surface and groundwater quality used for drinking and agricultural irrigation. This paper presents a brief review of the published literature reporting on current wastewater treatment technologies and effluent composition, with particular attention paid to reuse needs. The impact of these practices on water quality is further assessed from information and reports gathered from various sources on the quantity and quality of surface waters and groundwaters. Finally, alternatives to current wastewater treatment practices in Central Asia will be explored with a particular emphasis on the removal of contaminants of emerging concern, including biological treatment systems, adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, and managed/unmanaged aquifer recharge techniques based on permeable reactive barriers, aiming to increase the availability and quality of surface waters and groundwaters for safe water reuse.

Common reed (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud.) is a highly productive wetland plant and a potentially valuable source of renewable biomass worldwide. There is more than 10 million ha of reed area globally, distributed mainly across Eurasia followed by America and Africa. The literature analysis in this paper revealed that Kazakhstan alone harbored ca. 1,600,000–3,000,000 ha of reed area, mostly distributed in the deltas and along the rivers of the country. Herein, we explored the total reed biomass stock of 17 million t year−1 which is potentially available for harvesting in the context of wise use of wetlands. The aim of this paper is to reveal the distribution of reed resource potential in wetland areas of 13 provinces of Kazakhstan and the prospects for its sustainable utilization. Reed can be used as feedstock as an energy source for the production of pellets and biofuels, as lignocellulosic biomass for the production of high strength fibers for novel construction and packaging materials, and innovative polymers for lightweight engineering plastics and adhesive coatings. Thereby, it is unlikely that reed competes for land that otherwise is used for food production.

Research and Ways of Solving the Problem of Waterlogging of Arable Land in Northern Kazakhstan

The article presents the results of scientific research and gives ways to solve the problem of waterlogging of arable land in Northern Kazakhstan. This work aims to find out the degree of waterlogging, drainage of wetlands of the study area, and their use in agricultural production. To work out the issues of conducting drainage reclamation of wetlands, the experimental site was identified in the North Kazakhstan region, where amelioration work to drain it was carried out. The description of waterlogged soils of ground and surface moisture based on the results of studying their properties is given; comparative data on their morphological features, physicochemical properties, organic matter concentration, silt fraction, and physical clay for the studied soil layers are presented. The main problems of rational use of agricultural lands are analyzed, and ways of solving the identified problems of waterlogging of arable lands in northern Kazakhstan are proposed. The volumetric weight in the 0-100 cm layer ranges from 1.34-1.49 t/m 3 , and the humus concentration is 0.15-5.53%. Of the absorbed bases, calcium accounts for 80-90 %. By qualitative composition from the relict lakes of the Kamyshlov ravine -Big Salt Lake -salinity was 5.254 g/l. According to the assessment of alkalinity (according to the values of hydrogen index (pH), the surface waters of reservoirs -1 and 2 -are neutral, and those from Big Salt Lake are slightly alkaline. This present work can serve as a guide for improving soil conservation, sustainability, and planning for future agricultural production.
