Wetland Distribution Trends in Central Asia

Abstract: Anthropogenic activities and climate change contribute to the deterioration of wetlands worldwide with Central Asia (CA) being among the regions which are most severely affected. This study examined how the distribution of wetlands in CA has changed in the last two decades. Emphasis was put on inland wetlands protected as International Bird and Biodiversity Areas. Time series of maps of wetlands (i.e. reed beds) were created for the

“…A report from 2018 updated the information on the status of natural wetlands in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan by collection and dissemination of good practices for conservation and sustainable use of wetlands by local communities [32]. Human population growth and climate change contribute to the deterioration of natural wetlands worldwide including Central Asia [33]; thus, if managed properly, constructed wetlands could augment natural wetlands in remote areas of this region. Biogas digesters are another type of DEWATS that can be used to treat organic wastewater.…”

“…The time period after 2000, with regard to wetland distribution in the Ili Delta and other Ramsar Sites in Kazakhstan, was covered by Tesch and Thevs [59]. From 2000 to 2018, the reed bed area had not changed or slightly increased in most Ramsar Sites, also in the Ili Delta.…”

“…Wetlands across Central Asia have been experiencing long-term degradation and are among the regions which are most severely affected by land degradation [59]. In particular, during the 20th and early 21st centuries, the rate of wetlands degradation dramatically increased due to human intervention.…”

“…For the first time at the international level, the word protection was used for swamps [1]. Human economic activity and climate change caused the degradation of wetlands around the world [2]. More than -a billion people around the world depend on wetlands as a source of their livelihood -that's about every eighth of people on Earth.…”
