Background: Despite its health benefits, adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) has been decreasing, particularly in young generations and in Mediterranean regions, including Portugal. Socioeconomic and lifestyle factors have been shown to influence children and adolescents’ eating habits. This study aimed to assess the association between socioeconomic factors and children’s nutritional status with the MD adherence using the Eat Mediterranean (EM) program. Methods: Participant’s BMI and adherence to the MD diet was assessed at baseline and after the intervention. Data regarding socioeconomic status and KIDMED Index were collected using a family record form. The intervention consisted of various educational sessions addressing the principles and promoting a Mediterranean dietary pattern in schools belonging to two municipalities in the central area of Portugal. A total of 1,772 participants (from preschool to secondary school) met the inclusion criteria for the study. Results: At the end of the program, the adherence to the MD diet improved significantly with participants increasing their adherence to an optimal diet by 17.6%. Daily intake of foods belonging to the MD diet also increased significantly, and the intake of high energy density foods decreased. Mother’s educational level and household income were significantly (p < 0.0001) associated with optimal MD adherence by participants, in both stages. Nutritional status was not associated with the KIDMED Index. Discussion: The EM program showed to be effective in increasing MD adherence in this study population since optimal MD adherence was reported in most participants at the end of the EM program. Household income and mother’s educational level were positively associated with the diet quality of the children and adolescents.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of dietary calcium intake with anthropometric measures, physical activity and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) in 1176 Spanish children aged 6–9 years. Data were obtained from “Antropometría y Nutrición Infantil de Valencia” (ANIVA), a cross-sectional study of a representative sample. Dietary calcium intake assessed from three-day food records was compared to recommended daily intakes in Spain. Anthropometric measures (weight and height) were measured according to international standards and adherence to the MedDiet was evaluated using the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED) test. For the total sample of children, 25.8% had inadequate calcium intake, a significantly higher prevalence in girls (p = 0.006) and inadequate calcium intake was associated with lower height z-score (p = 0.001) for both sexes. In girls, there was an inverse relationship between calcium intake and body mass index (p = 0.001) and waist/hip ratio (p = 0.018). Boys presented a polarization in physical activity, reporting a greater level of both physical and sedentary activity in comparison with girls (p = 0.001). Children with poor adherence to MedDiet, even if they consume two yogurts or cheese (40 g) daily, adjusted by gender, age, total energy intake, physical activity and father’s level of education, are at risk of inadequate total calcium intake (odds ratio adjusted [ORa]: 3.36, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13–9.94, p = 0.001). The intake of these dairy products was insufficient to cover calcium intake recommendations in this age group (6–9 years). It is important to prioritize health strategies that promote the MedDiet and to increase calcium intake in this age group.

Associations between dietary patterns and screen time among Korean adolescents

Data are limited on the association between dietary patterns and screen time among Korean adolescents. The present study identified dietary patterns of 691 adolescents, aged 13-18 years, who had participated in the Third Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES III) and analyzed their associations with screen time. Screen time was defined as the time spent watching TV, using a computer, or playing video games was calculated as a sum of all these times. Dietary patterns and their factor scores were derived from a food frequency questionnaire using the factor analysis method. To analyze the association between dietary patterns and screen time, we conducted multiple linear regression analysis. We also performed multiple logistic regression analysis to estimate odds ratios (OR) of excessive screen time (2 hours or longer per day) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). We identified 2 dietary patterns labeled "the Korean healthy dietary pattern" and "the Western diet and fast foods pattern". The former included mixed grains, legumes, potatoes, red meat, eggs, fish, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, seaweeds, and mushrooms, whereas the latter included noodles, bread, red meat, poultry, fast foods, snack, and soft drinks. After controlling for potential confounding factors, factor scores for the Korean healthy dietary pattern were inversely associated (P-value for trend < 0.01) and those for the Western diet and fast foods pattern were positively associated with the screen time (P-value for trend < 0.01). Adolescents in the top tertile of the scores for the Korean healthy dietary pattern had a multivariable-adjusted OR [95% CI] of 0.44 (0.25-0.75) for excessive screen time compared with those in the lowest tertile. On the basis of these findings, adolescents who have excessive screen time may need to be encouraged to consume a more healthy diet.
