“…These compositions are estimates horn 2.1 INEEL staff assuming fill separations of the waste into high-and low-activity fractions. The databases for glass-property compositions and the predictive tools developed for Hanford (Hrma et al 1994;Vienna et al 1995;Crum et al 1997;Mika et al 1997;Feng et al 1995), Savannah River (Jantzen et al 1995) and West Valley (Piepel and Redgate 1997;Reimus et al 1988;Chick et al 1984;Bynnell 1988) are not adequate to calculate acceptable glass compositions for the high-zirconi~low-iron, INEEL HAW glasses. Five glasses were fabricated with 17.7 to 19 mass% of the BL waste.…”

“…set of compositional components against the durability index [ 1971, without regard to the physical or theoretical significance of the result. The composition variation studies (CVS) model [198,199,200] does just this: in its present form, it is a linear model, but nonlinear approaches are under development.…”

“…The Composition Variability Study (CVS) is being developed at Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) to aid in the development of nuclear waste glasses for the Hanford Waste Vitrification Plant (HWVP) waste that meet quality and processability requirements [ 198-2003. The CVS model is entirely empirical and simply correlates the weight-fraction of a component in a glass with a measure of durability, generally B loss in a 7-day PCT test [199]. A similar approach was used to develop compositions for vitrification of West Valley nuclear wastes [200]. The West Valley study will not be discussed in detail, since the methodologies and conclusions are the same as for the CVS.…”

“…Two other studies, both using Teflona test vessels, may shed light on the issue of CO, affecting PCI' results (Reimus et al 1988 andOlson et al 1994 similar; in the majority of cases, the normalized release rate differences were 5 10%. Although CO, values were not measured in the resulting leachates for either study, one would expect the tests that used Ascarika would have had lower levels of CO, in the leachates as opposed to the tests for which special precautions were not taken to exclude CO,.…”
