West Nile Virus Seroprevalence in the Greek Population in 2013: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey

Abstract: Cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) disease were recorded for three consecutive years in Greece following the year 2010 outbreak. A cross-sectional serologic survey was conducted to estimate the WNV seroprevalence and assess the ratio of infection to neuroinvasive disease. A stratified left-over sampling methodology was used including age and residence strata. A total of 3,962 serum samples was collected and tested for WNV Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies by Enzyme–Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). All positive … Show more

“…Evidence of high exposure among older people was found in previous studies in Israel [7, 13, 14] and in other countries [18, 22]. However, using the number of years lived in Israel has allowed us to differentiate between being old and spending more time in Israel.…”

“…Meanwhile 2012 showed more than 150 human cases, in 2013 the number of human cases was reduced to approximately one half of the previous year. This reduction in the number of cases, while conditions seem favorable might be highly likely related to human behaviour, control measures over mosquito populations , Chaskopoulou et al, 2016 and inmunization of the bird and human population , Hadjichristodoulou et al, 2015, Chaskopoulou et al, 2016.…”

“…After that, human cases were reported for four more years, during a transmission cycle that goes from June to September (Hadjichristodoulou et al, 2015). The first cases in 2010 were reported in northern Greece (central Macedonia) near the city of Thessaloniki.…”

“…In western Europe, several sporadic equine and/or human WNV cases were reported in France, Portugal and Spain since 1962, although no major human outbreaks were observed . This epidemiological situation changed in 2008 when in Italy, 10 years after the last epidemic in horses, there was a major outbreak in the North which spread rapidly over eight provinces . There have since been many re‐occurrences in Italy from 2009 onwards; and there was a large outbreak in Greece during 2010 .…”
