West Nile Virus Monitoring of Migratory and Resident Birds in Germany

Abstract: West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus naturally circulating in wild bird populations. The virus is also capable to infect a broad range of vertebrate species. Humans and equines are highly susceptible and can develop mild flu-like illnesses as well as severe encephalitis leading to fatalities. Most recently, WNV was found to circulate in countries close to Germany, such as France, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, and Hungary. Given this epidemiological situation its spread to Germany cannot be ru… Show more

“…Neutralizing antibodies against USUV were also demonstrated in birds from the United Kingdom [5]. In contrast, no serological evidence for USUV circulation was found in birds from Germany between 2007 and 2011 [6], [7]. In 2009, two human cases with an USUV-related neuroinvasive illness were reported from Italy [8], [9].…”

“…Barn swallows were the most utilised avian host overall in this study (n = 95) (Table 3). Members of this species are long-distance migrants which over-winter in southern Africa and have been identified as having been exposed to WNV in Germany [52]. Indeed, several birds identified as blood meal hosts in this study are highly susceptible to infection with arboviruses.…”

“…However, their possible role in the long-distance translocation of arboviruses such as WNV from endemic regions has been extensively discussed [4951], and they are targeted as part of arbovirus surveillance programmes across Europe [28, 52]. Barn swallows were the most utilised avian host overall in this study (n = 95) (Table 3).…”

“…Neutralizing WNV antibody titers were determined by VNT on Vero cells as published previously [33] using 1:10, 1:20, 1:40 etc. dilutions (in MEM) and homologous challenge virus (100 TCID 50 of WNV lineage 1 NY99, GenBank accession no.…”
