Wellbore Segmentation using Inflow Control Devices: Design and Optimisation Process

Abstract: Inflow Control Devices (ICD) optimize production, delay water influx, eliminate / minimize annular flow, and ensure a uniform inflow along the horizontal wellbore at the cost of a small pressure drop. ICDs have brought promises to the industry’s efforts in horizontal wells inflow profile optimization which contributes to the economic success of horizontal wells. Although the structure of different types of ICD varies from one design to another, the principle is the same - restrict flow, and ther… Show more

“…Analytical modeling is a simple and feasible method to predict production, but it does not provide an accurate prediction of production because it ignores the pressure drop in the fracture. Semi-analytical models can predict production accurately, but numerical modeling requires a lot of basic data. Semi-analytical models take advantage of the benefits of analytical and numerical models and do not have some of their major drawbacks. Semi-analytical modeling considers more factors and makes less assumptions than analytical models, and its computational time is less than that of numerical models.…”

“…The latter can have a greater reservoir-well contact and, as a result, a higher sweep efficiency. Figure (1) depicts an example of a horizontal well schematic. Since 1990, horizontal well technology has advanced and become more widely available, with an increasing number of horizontal wells being drilled (Figure 2).…”

“…The number and location of packers play the most important part in ICD design. The overall budget of well completion, reservoir heterogeneity, location of fracture, mudstone, abnormal highpressure zone and desired effect all play an important role in the final decision (Al Marzouqi et al 2010). First, we need to seal off the mudstone section and natural fracture zone directly connecting with bottom water.…”
