Well integrity assessment by a 1:1 scale wellbore experiment: Exposition to dissolved CO 2 and overcoring

Abstract: Highlights • A 1:1 scale experiment on well integrity is carried out in a rock laboratory. • The stage B dedicated to well exposure to CO2-rich pore water is presented. • The well system has been ultimately overcored for inspection. • Key messages on processes affecting the integrity of a well are derived. • Similar experimental setup could be used for other aspects of well integrity.

“…Different types of defects (e.g. casing corrosion, microannuli, and cement alteration) can affect the well integrity and have been identified in all full-scale projects (Carey et al, 2007;Crow et al, 2010;Duguid et al, 2017Duguid et al, , 2014Gawel et al, 2017;Manceau et al, 2016). Although none of the authors report a definitive compromise in the integrity of the monitored CCS well, it is known that these defects can lead from a workover operation to a complete stop in the injection process.…”
