Well-differentiated thyroid cancer: the Philippine General Hospital experience

Abstract: Background: Well-differentiated thyroid cancer (WDTC) is the most common form of thyroid malignancy. While it is typically associated with good prognosis, it may exhibit higher recurrence and mortality rates in selected groups, particularly Filipinos. This paper aims to describe the experience of a Philippine Hospital in managing patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. “…[1,3,12] In these studies, disease multifocality (diagnosed by surgical pathology) and large tumor size (>1 cm) at surgical resection were statistically significantly associated with treatment resistance such as was seen in a recent retrospective previous study looking at RAI treatment outcomes within a Filipino patient population. [3,13] This study however only looked at patients in a specific ethnic cohort. Although our patient cohort was smaller in number than this study, it was not limited to a specific ethnic cross section of the public.…”

“…In another local study, size of the nodule, duration of the lesion, and history of childhood irradiation were not useful parameters in distinguishing benign from malignant lesions since most of the cases presented as slowly growing goiter with average duration of 6 years with malignant cases occurring sporadically and with rare cases among family members with similar malignancy (20). Solid nodules, microcalcifications, increased nodule size greater than or equal to 2 cm.…”

“…Papillary and follicular cancer make up the majority (>90%) of all thyroid cancers worldwide 1 . Papillary thyroid cancer constituted the majority of diagnosed thyroid cancer with variations in relative frequencies in reported studies from KSA, Poland, India, Brazil, Turkey, Germany, Italy, China and Philippines 2,7,9,10,13,14,[19][20][21][22][23][24] . Even in Africa where follicular thyroid cancer was predominant over papillary in the 1980s, a more frequent occurrence of papillary thyroid cancer was reported by Ogbera and Kuku 25 .…”
