Well defined difluorogold(iii) complexes supported by N-ligands

Abstract: Stable difluorogold(iii) complexes can be easily synthesized either via oxidation of N-ligated cationic Au(i) precursors using XeF2 or from tricationic Au(iii) precursors by displacement of the N-ligands using fluoride from economical KF. X-ray crystallographic studies of the bisimidazole ligated derivative shows the shortest Au-F bond known in a gold complex.

“…Recent examples focused on the structural characterization of gold(III) fluorides have also been reported by Riedel, [6h,i] Menjón [6j] and Dutton, [6k] respectively. Interestingly, and despite these significant advances, the reactivity of gold(III) fluorides in the context of C(sp 2 )−C(sp) reductive elimination has not been explored yet, even if they have been proposed to be crucial reaction intermediates in this type of C−C bond forming reactions [5g–i] .…”

“…[2,7] However,i solation of some derivatives has been reported, either from more accessible halido gold complexes throughX /F exchange reactions (X = Cl, Br,I ) [8,9,10] or by oxidation with XeF 2 . [11,12] N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have attracted increasing attention for the stabilization of highly reactive compounds, for example, complexes that contain transition metals in high oxidation states,d ue to their steric demanda nd strong s-donating properties. [13] Recently,o ur group reported on the stabilization of AuF 3 using the SIMes (1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene) ligand.…”

“…In previous work we reported the synthesis and the use of 25CN in generating difluorogold(III) complexes but the crystal structure was not reported. 23 The solid state structures of compounds 25H and 25CN are depicted in Figures 6 and 7. Unfortunately no crystals of diffraction quality could be obtained for compound 25NMe2.…”
