Welfare effects of vegetable producers' inclusiveness in supply chain coordination: direct effects and spillovers

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to estimate the effect of vegetable producers' inclusiveness in supply chain coordination on vegetable production performance and potential spillover effect on farm and non-farm income.Design/methodology/approachA comprehensive dataset comprised of 410 paired vegetable producers in China is applied. Propensity score matching (PSM) estimation method is used to control for the selection bias problem.FindingsThe empirical results indicate that contracting farming does not have … Show more

“…Empirical studies explicitly exploring the role of cooperatives in product certification are limited. An analysis based on an extensive survey of vegetable producers in 2015 shows that cooperatives have significantly positive effects on quality certification of products (Liang, Li, & Bai, 2021). Dong and Liang (2023) further find that cooperative membership not only promotes the adoption of quality certification by farmers, but also increases their farm performance.…”

“…Farmers may improve their reputation (Laksono et al , 2022), satisfy legal obligations (Rao et al , 2021) and get an edge over rivals in the market (Eze et al , 2021) by following the certification standards. Regulations (Misra et al , 2022; Rao et al , 2021), market demand (Fam et al , 2019; Nathan et al , 2021), risk management (Liang et al , 2021; My et al , 2021), market access (Evteeva et al , 2019; Liang et al , 2021), knowledge (Jevsnik and Raspor, 2022; Nyokabi et al , 2021) and resource availability (Iftekhar et al , 2020; Yoon et al , 2020) are some of the factors that determine whether or not farmers choose to obtain food safety certification or not. Adopting certifications provides various benefits, including increased food safety, improved product quality, easier market access and industry collaboration.…”

“…Indeed, producer organisations also help small farmers improve technology adoption, get favourable credit terms and thus eliminate interlocking of factor and product markets where the farmers have to sell their produce back to traders or commission agents who advance credit or provide farm inputs on credit (Verma et al, 2019). The co-operative impact on yields and profits of member farmers unlike contract farming could be significant but membership also could have positive impact on farm and non-farm income due to spill over effects (Liang et al, 2020). There have been studies on the impact of the co-operatives on farmer members in the Indian context (Bhamra, 2016) as well as scoping reviews covering Asia and Africa (Bizikova et al, 2020) that found many positive outcomes influencing income, yield and costs.…”
