“…This is consistent with the fact that using RAS the conditions in the rearing tanks can be adjusted relatively easily, according to demand, in terms of reared fish species living ethology at each biological stage (Huntingford and Kadri 2008;Papoutsoglou 1991Papoutsoglou , 1996aPapoutsoglou , b, 2004Pottinger 2008;Timmons and Ebeling 2007;Volpato et al 2007). …”

“…Unpublished results from the present study confirm that plasma lactate and cortisol in creased in S. aurata after a progressive drop in O 2 , declining below the LOS for the last hour. It is therefore suggested that LOS is a suitable limit for ac ceptable drops in O 2 in S. aurata aquaculture, with respect to the physiological integrity and welfare of the fish (Huntingford & Kadri 2008). It should be emphasized that higher levels of O 2 are expected to obtain fast growth and efficient production, as appetite is generally reduced at higher levels of O 2 than the LOS.…”

“…Further, a drop in O 2 to levels below the LOS can be expected to induce stress (increased plasma levels of corticosteroids and catecholamines) and lactic acidosis (Van Raaij et al 1996, Vianen et al 2001, Petersen & Gamperl 2011, Remen et al 2012, 2013. The LOS can therefore be implemented in aquaculture as the lower limit for acceptable O 2 levels with regard to the physiological function and welfare of farmed fish (Huntingford & Kadri 2008).…”

“…Living Resour. 24, 53-61 (2011) following conditions: (1) the animal can adapt to its environment and is in good health, with all its biological systems working appropriately; (2) the animal is able to meet what are often called its "behavioral needs"; and (3) the animal is free of negative experiences such as pain, fear, and hunger (Huntingford and Kadri 2008). When cultured, fish are commonly exposed to repeated acute stresses that differ from those they face in the wild, such as: handling, grading, transport, and prophylactic treatment (Pottinger and Pickering 1997).…”
